Youth Baseball Shoes – Knowing What to Look For
When it comes time to get your kids into sports, whether it be baseball, softball, soccer or whatever, you’re going to have to go get them a certain amount of equipment for the game. While there is a lot of attention placed on name brands, such as which super star athlete wears Nike or adidas or Mizuno, which style, what color will match with the team uniforms etc, there is one component that all too often gets completely overlooked. That is the actual type of ‘cleat’ they should be wearing.
I put ‘cleat’ in parenthesis for a reason. Often times when we think of cleats we think of fairly significant studs coming out of the bottom of the shoe, designed to give the wearer more traction. With baseball cleats, these are sometime especially aggressive with the cleats looking more like teeth made of metal. While this may work well in certain conditions; ideal conditions like you find in most Major League Baseball parks, the truth is that the fields we get to play on in Little League baseball are usually a tad bit different (to say the least!)
If you happen to live in an area where the ground is especially hard, such as in Arizona or New Mexico, or if you live somewhere that gets a tremendous amount of rain such that playing on natural surfaces has been replaced with artificial turf in many instances, having such aggressive baseball shoes is not a good idea. You simply won’t get the traction you need, and in turn, the athlete won’t be able to perform at their best.
Think of it this way… if you were asked to run as fast as you could and make sharp turns on a concrete sidewalk wearing metal spikes, how well do you think you would do? Probably not well at all! In fact, you could very well end up hurting yourself.
That is why you need to consider baseball turf shoes if you happen to be playing on surfaces that are fairly hard. All the top manufacturers mentioned above will offer a good selection of turf shoes for kids in their youth baseball cleats area.
