Why You Should Consider Adopting a Puppy

Are you thinking about getting a puppy? I encourage you to consider adopting one over buying. Adopting a pet can be a life changing experience. When you adopt a pet from an animal shelter or a rescue league, you’re saving a life. You’re also freeing up space for another homeless pet and you will not be supporting puppy mills.

Although it’s a very disturbing statistic, about 4 million dogs and cats are euthanized each year in the United States. Many of these animals have ended up in animal shelters because their owners could not or did not want to care of them any longer. Take for example these two beautiful Siberian huskies, Puppy and Laverne. They are mother and son who at the ages of 13 and 14 have been rescued by the caring members of the Siberian Husky Club of Greater New York. If these two purebred huskies were puppies, people would be lining up to adopt them.  Puppies are always first go in any animal shelter. It’s much harder to find forever homes for older dogs like Puppy and Laverne. If they were two cuddly husky puppies their chances of being adopted would be much greater.

Animal shelters simply do not have enough room for all the abandoned animals. When an animal is brought to a shelter they are living on borrowed time. Shelters have a limit on how long they can keep an animal before it’s euthanized. In most cases this usually only a matter of days. If an animal is not adopted in this short time, they will never make it out of the shelter.  When you adopt a pet from a shelter you are also freeing space for another homeless pet.

The number of purebred dogs that end up in shelters and rescues is also a startling high number. While there are many responsible dog breeders out there, too many people purchase purebred puppies from pet stores who get their puppies from puppy mills. Puppy mills are in business to make money and they really do not have any regard for the animals that they are breeding. A lot of puppies that come from puppy mills develop serious health and behavior issues. Unfortunately many owners cannot deal with their pet’s issues so they end up in a shelter or a rescue. If you adopt your pet you’ll know that you are not supporting puppy mills!
