When to Restore a Classic Chevy Truck
There are many reasons why an individual would consider restoring a classic Chevy truck. The physical appearance may be in such a state of deterioration that it is an embarrassment and an eye sore. The poor thing barely runs because of various mechanical problems. An individual may have plans to enter the old Chevy in auto shows or special events. The vehicle carries great sentimental value and the owner wishes to keep it for an extended period of time. A restoration is not the for the faint of heart. It is a time consuming and costly project.
Most shop owners and their employees do what they do because they enjoy the work. However, there are things a consumer should do prior to choosing an establishment for a restoration project. The first thing a person may consider is getting the opinions of other truck owners who have had their vehicles restored. They may be able to provide valuable information as to where to take the truck and what to expect. After deciding upon a shop, ask for its references of previous customers. Make sure to obtain a written detailed estimate.
Inquiries as to how long the project will take and whether periodic visits to observe progress are not out of the question. If the restoration estimate is beyond the current budget, back out or modify the work requirements. Once the project has started make sure to obtain revised estimates every time a change occurs. The Bureau of Regulatory Services states that it is not illegal but not advisable to pay for any services in advance. Doing so diminishes an individual’s ability to resolve later disputes.
Ensure there is clear and concise communication between all members as to the specific work that is desired and the resulting costs. Paint work usually entails prepping surfaces and applying paint but may or may not include repairing dents, rust or panel work. Reconditioning involves more than paint work but still less than restoration. Complete restoration usually denotes disassembly and reconstruction of the entire vehicle so that its finished state is like new or better.
