What is Azodyl and How Can It Help Your Pet?

If you have ever asked the question “what is Azodyl?” you have come to the right place to find the answer Azodyl is a patented nutritional supplement given to both cats and dogs.  It comes in capsule form, and the contents of those capsules are beneficial bacteria.  This is not a product to be given to all pets though.  It has been specifically developed to help those animals that are struggling to break down all the toxins in their blood.  This is usually a result of chronic kidney damage or renal failure.

Azodyl Capsules is a non-prescription, or ‘over the counter’ pet medicine which means it is really easy to buy from wherever you choose.  But it should not be used unless your vet recommends such a product as over-medicating our pets is just as silly as over-medicating ourselves. That being said all the evidence seems to suggest that this is one pet medication with no side effects and that works well in conjunction with other pet medications.

The reason so many vets recommend the use of Azodyl is that once the kidneys start to fail, there is a gradual build up of toxic compounds within the blood and in the bowels.  These compounds can themselves cause further kidney damage, so speeding up the deterioration of the pet’s health. Azodyl stops this build up of toxins by a process known as Enteric Dialysis.  Simply put the beneficial bacteria help break down unwanted compounds in the blood and bowel, so supplementing the work that would ordinarily be easily handled by healthy kidneys.

Azodyl is usually first suggested as a treatment when signs of Azotemia have begun. This is simply the build up of unwanted nitrogen rich compounds in the system, and though most often associated with renal problems can be caused by other conditions such as congestive heart failure.  Whatever is causing the Azotemia, Azodyl capsules may be able to help.

Azodyl for Cats or for Dogs is one and the same product.  You just need to remember to give your pet a different number of capsules per day depending on their weight.  It is also key to note that each capsule must be swallowed whole and not broken or chewed.  This is to ensure the bacteria are absorbed at the correct time during digestion.
