USMC ILBE Military Backpack

The ILBE (Improved Load Bearing Equipment) Backpack is a backpack system produced for the United States Marine Corps. The ILBE Military Backpack was developed to help soldiers carry their vast number of tools and equipment for battle and also to help with comfort in relation to equipment and battle. The main objective for this backpack was to help a soldier be more efficient and comfortable while in a war situation.

The ILBE Military Backpack has three different types of set ups for soldiers. Each setup is designed for the soldier to be more combat effective. The firs setup is what the call the “assault set up”. The ILBE assault pack setup hold the basics for a battle situation. It holds water, ammunition, and small amount of other equipment that is a necessity for soldiers. This set up was developed to enable a soldier to be able to transport ammunition and gear in a swift manner while in combat.

The second setup for the ILBE Backpack is the approach march set up. This setup was designed for soldiers who would be out in the field for a long period of time and would not be able to replenish the backpack’s contents every day.

The third and final setup for the ILBE Backpack is the existence setup. This setup is generally used by soldiers who experience situations in which they can not be resupplied. Food, ammunition and water are the first necessities in this setup. Other tools and equipment in this setup are left up to the soldier and is generally packed in accordance to the time of year, weather, and theater of war.

The backpack is designed with the ILBE Hydration System or “camel pack” to assist the soldier with water supplies while out in the field. This pack allows the soldier to carry large amounts of water without having to carry a cumbersome water canteen. This water pack carries 100 ounces of water. The backpack also allows soldiers to carry food, water, ammunition, mortar rounds, and other necessary equipment. The backpack was developed to allow upto 120 lbs. of ammunition, water, and equipment to be stored.

The ILBE pack has allowed soldiers to become more combat efficient and allowed soldiers to carry large amounts of ammunition and equipment while keeping the soldier comfortable.
