Using an Indoor Dog Kennel
Using an indoor dog kennel is a wonderful way to train a puppy as they instinctively know not to potty near their sleeping or eating place. It offers a secure place that is available to your pet at any time and is especially useful when the owner cannot be home. Put a dog bed in the kennel to train the dog to think of its “special place” as a good thing and not as a form of punishment. Most dogs will prefer their own space instead of the hustle and bustle of busy family life at some time.
The kennel can be an entire room that is free of hazards to a pet (electric cords, cleaning supplies, small items that could be swallowed) or it can be a portable dog kennel made of wood, plastic, wicker, canvas, or mesh. Colors and styles are available to fit into your décor. Some models are quite luxurious and there are many different styles of doors to consider. Some are lockable, some open from the top and some open from a side. Choose the design you decide best fits your need and the need of your pet after careful consideration. It is a good idea to have a removable mat that can be taken out and cleaned in case of accidents.
Dog kennels can be two, three, four, or six feet high. There is a large range of sizes available to fit your pet’s breed and temperament. Some can be refigured to a shape that will include one piece of furniture or exclude another.
Remember to place a water dish, possibly a food dish, and toys in the kennel to make being there enjoyable for your dog. Toys should be rotated to retain the dog’s interest. You will fall into the proper routine as you get to know how long of an attention span your particular dog has. Your dog is a relative of the wolf and has a need for the secure feeling of being in a den.
