Using A Baby Gate to Protect Your Child
One of the biggest problem new parents face is that of protecting their child from all of the dangers inherent in the average home. Although most of these are easy enough to deal, such as plugging unused electrical outlets, there are a number of dangers that remain hidden to even the most experienced parents. The most effective way to keep a child out of danger is to restrain him, and a baby gate is one of the most effective ways to do that.
A gate limits the child’s actions by closing off exits to other rooms. His temptation limited, he is limited to the room he’s in, which has been presumably baby-proofed more thoroughly than the other rooms, and so he’s able to play in the room free of worry, both for him and his parents. Of course, as the kid gets bigger and brighter, he is able to find a way out of the restraint, but by then the child is hopefully intelligent enough to avoid most dangers.
The biggest problem is to make sure that the fastener is not on the side facing the child. This allows the baby to open the gate, and, because he simply doesn’t realize that he needs to hold the gate down as he opens, it may spring back and harm him. However, the risk is minimal as long as it’s installed correctly.
A baby gate is one of the best ways to keep your child safe, especially when combined with other precautions. Wires, outlets, and pets may present a risk, but they are easily dealt with by an aware parent. Just keep in mind that it’s just the beginning, and your child will grow up safe and sound, and hopefully able to put him in danger. Too bad no one has worked out a safety for the teenage years!
