The Pros and Cons of Aquamarine Engagement Rings

So you’ve finally gone and done it!  You have decided to become engaged.  There are many very important decisions in your future, for sure.  One of them is what type of engagement ring will you get?  Of course, in the big scheme of things, it isn’t the most important thing, but it is something that will be with you for a very long time and you will want to make a good decision.  Perhaps you have considered aquamarine engagement rings.  If so, read this to see what the pros and cons of aquamarine engagement rings are.

Pros

  • Aquamarine is a common gemstone, and that makes them inexpensive for the most part.
  • Aquamarine gemstones are usually flawless.  Even if you come across some antique aquamarine engagement rings, it is unlikely that they will have any flaws.  This is a good thing, because if you want a larger stone, it will look as perfect as its smaller cousins.
  • Faux aquamarines are very uncommon.  The cost of manufacturing faux stones is high, and since aquamarines are abundant naturally, it isn’t cost effective to make the “fakes”.  This means when you shop, you can be fairly certain that the aquamarine engagement rings you look at will be genuine aquamarine.
  • Aquamarines come in various colors, and go from almost colorless, to very pale light blue, to a deep blue green.  The darker the color, the more expensive it will be, but you do have a wide range of colors to pick from.
  • Aquamarines are an 8 on the Mohs hardness scale, compared to diamonds, which are a 10.  Because they are very hard and durable, they can be cut into lots of different sizes and shapes.
  • If you are partial to diamonds, aquamarine and diamond engagement rings are very common.  You don’t have to choose, get some of each in one ring!

Cons

  • Aquamarine is a hard mineral as mentioned above, but it may also develop internal cracks if it takes a hard hit.  I know this from personal experience – I hit an aquamarine stone against the inside of my washer while removing some heavy jeans, and it developed a small crack inside the stone.
  • Aquamarine stones may fade with time.  Keep this in mind if you are shopping for vintage aquamarine engagement rings, as they may have started out with a more expensive dark blue aquamarine, but now are faded to a lighter color.
  • Topaz stones that are light in color are sometimes mistaken for aquamarine, and some less-than-honest dealers may try to pass off a light blue topaz for an aquamarine.  This is not good, as topaz stones are less expensive, and you don’t want to pay for aquamarine when you’re not getting it.
  • Aquamarine engagement rings may need to be cleaned more often than rings with other types of stones.  They seem to attract dirt and skin oil quickly, so regular cleaning is a must to keep them looking their best.

That’s it, the pros and cons of aquamarine engagement rings.  They certainly are gorgeous.  No one can decide if this type of ring will be suitable for you except you, so take your time and do some serious shopping before you buy.  Whether you are shopping for gold cubic zirconia rings, sterling silver bracelets, or aquamarine engagement rings, stick with reputable dealers and you will be sure to end up with a beautiful piece of jewelry that you will treasure for a lifetime.
