The 4 Crucial Questions to Ask When Buying a Nursery Rocking Chair

A rocking chair is the must have piece of bedroom furniture for your new nursery. A well built rocker is a marriage of good design, comfort, durability and beauty. It is the center piece for you and your child to bond. You will probably spend many hours together in this chair. That is why, when it comes to buying a rocking chair, that you make sure that it is the most comfortable, practical and safe piece of furniture for you and your baby.

So what do you need to know about your rocking chair?  There are some crucial questions to ask.

Is it well-built?

A well built rocking chair, whether a traditional style wooden rocking or a glider rocking chair, will be sturdy. It will move smoothly and silently and will feel safe and sturdy to use. If a rocking chair wobbles or squeaks as it moves this is an indication of poor construction methods or materials. You need to know that your rocking chair is very safe for you both. If you have an old rocking chair as a family heirloom, dont worry, it wont need to be thrown out. Take it to a professional furniture restorer and see if it simply needs repairing.

Squeaky rockers are no good either. You may be spending hours with your baby in this chair and the noise could become very irritating. On a glider rocking chair, you may just need some oil on the moving parts. On a traditional rocker, look for signs or wear or poor construction.

Is it safe?

Traditional rocking chairs are, by nature dangerous to little hands when baby is crawling. You need to remember this when the time comes and perhaps block the chair so it cannot rock when baby is on the floor. For glider rocking chairs, make sure that the moving parts are covered by a safety guard.

Is it easy to use?

Check that the rocker is not too low, or slippy on the floor. You need to be able to get in and out of the chair with your arms full. If it slips back, you may tumble over. If it is too low, it may be difficult to get out of with a sleeping baby.

Is it comfortable?

Many rockers come ready upholstered. If so you may want to choose darker colours to protect from staining or use a throw to protect the fabric. Rocking chair cushions for the old fashioned wooden rocker are a great way to keep the chair looking clean. They can be washed and have removable covers that are washable as well.

With prices for new rocking chairs ranging from $200 to $2000 it is wise to check that your chair can do the job it was intended for. Family heirlooms may well work just as well if not better, but they are worth a good overhaul if you are intending to get some serious wear out of them for the next few years.
