Replace the watch band to rejuvenate a watch
Posted in Jewelry on August 23rd, 2010 by Jim – Comments OffModern ladies and gents watches are made to an incredible standard. The time keeping accuracy offered by battery powered quartz watches is incredible, with only a loss/gain of half a second per day or less. Shock resistant glass and waterproof cases protect the mechanical or electrical workings too. In fact the weakest part of a watch these days is the band or strap. It is not uncommon for anything other than steel straps to become worn at the point where they bend as you thread the buckle through the eye in the material. Even leather straps wear out like this but luckily many watch bands can be replaced.
A new watch band can be purchased or custom made from any number of outlets. Ebay and amazon are good places to survey the market and get an idea of how much you should expect to pay. Most bands can be removed and some manufactures offer a range of colour straps that can be swapped to match an outfit. If you want to replace a steel watch strap be careful, these are harder to remove and it is difficult to replace the band with the same snug fit on the face.
If you are lucky enough to have an old wrist watch in the family, perhaps one that has been passed down a generation or two, if you’ve come across a beautiful yet worn watch at an antiques fair or some unlikely place then why not spend a few dollar on a new strap? The face and internal mechanisms can be cleaned and by doing so you get yourself a first class and probably very unique timepiece.
There are many different exotic types of leather watch band ranging from alligator ostrich, from the humble cow to Python. Each one of these leather types retains the distinctive markings of the animal they came from.
