Basic Swimming Pool Etiquette

Posted in Swimming on January 15th, 2010 by Jim – Comments Off

Do you often go to a public swimming pool?  If you do, do you practice the proper etiquette?  While there is no formal guidebook, there are definitely several actions you should and should not take.  If you are interested in finding out what these are, keep on reading this section.

The first action is maintaining situational awareness around you when you are on the diving board.  At most public swimming pools, the diving board will be in the deepest portion of the pool.  This area will usually be roped off.  However, even with this area roped off, you will often see people swimming around the diving board.  Hence, before you dive into the water, you should always look around to make sure that you will not land on anyone.

Next, before entering the pool, you will want to make sure you use the showers.  While it can be a hassle to shower, it is considered good form to do so.  By taking a shower, you can ensure that you wash off any unhygienic items before you enter the pool.  Also, when you exit the pool, you should also shower, so you can get any swimming pool chlorine off of your skin.

The last area that we are going to discuss is the swimming lane.  If you have to share a lane with someone, make sure you are polite.  As an example, you should take one side of the lane while the other person uses the other side of the same lane.  Additionally, even if the other swimmer is very slow, it isn’t considered polite to pass them.

We believe that if you implement the actions that were discussed in this article, you will have a much more enjoyable time at the public swimming pool.  Not only will you enjoy yourself more, other people will think more highly of you as you display the proper manners.

My Rant About Swimming Pools

Posted in Garden on November 21st, 2009 by admin – Comments Off

I’ve never had much of an interest in installing a swimming pool on my property for some reason. I know most people crazy at the thought of being able to take a dip but for me there are so many negatives associated with getting one that i feel it not worth the effort.

First off you need to get the pool built and that’s going to cost you a huge amount of cash. I guess I’ve just never been one for swimming so I’d rather spend that rather large chunk of change on something else, a motorbike perhaps, or maybe an new home entertainment system.

Then of course there is the cost of upkeep if you are not going to do it our self. You’ll need someone to clean your pool and use all those nasty chemicals to ensure the water isn’t a harbor for dangerous bacteria, unless of course you are willing to do all these things yourself. Plus, you are going to have to shell out for all the other extras that go along with having a pool with all those companies trying to sell you things you could probably do without such as automatic swimming pool covers, which I admit are pretty cool but I mean come on, I’ve got better things to spend my hard earned cash on.

These things definitely put me off getting a pool in the yard but perhaps the absolute biggest problem I have with them is the amount of resources that gets used in the building and maintaining of these things. The concrete that gets used to make it in the first place isn’t exactly environmentally friendly and then you have the huge amounts of water that you are literally pouring down the drain. Can’t we think of better ways to spend our resources when you could just use the swimming pool in town or take a trip to the beach.
