Uses and Advantages of Solar Energy

Posted in Energy on May 31st, 2011 by Jim – Comments Off

Solar energy is an energy derived from solar radiation that can be converted to electricity. Solar energy, like biomass, geothermal, hydropower, wind and ocean, is a form of renewable energy resource, or one which, as a resource, is renewable on a regular basis at a relatively rapid rate and which makes itself available over an indefinite period of time.  There are advantages of solar energy which gives it an edge over other resources which are currently used for power generation. Energy being the backbone of a country’s economic progress and an important utility for every household, it is good to know of the benefits that can be derived from using energy supplied constantly by our Sun.

Environmental advantage of solar energy – Development and economic growth have environmental implications. Fossil fuel now widely used for power generation emits carbon dioxide that proved to be hazardous to the environment. Solar does not emit carbon. Increased use of this renewable energy would reduce the demand for electricity otherwise generated from power plants using fossil fuel.

Advantages of using solar energy –  Fossil fuel is now dwindling and, being a political commodity, its price is highly volatile. Like other primary commodities, it is socially sensitive and any movement whether in supply or price will be felt by even the lowest level of the community. Shifting to renewable energy use like solar would help reduce dependence on fossil fuel and the uncertainties it brings. What is more significant about solar is, it can be installed off grid. With this, more remote areas are now electrified resulting to increase in activities thus somehow easing poverty. And unlike fossil fuel, solar, being an exhaustible resource, is there as long as the sun shines. More importantly, solar radiation is widely distributed over the earth.

There are advantages and disadvantages of solar energy. But with the current issues the world faces in terms of energy security, environment protection and climate change, shift to solar use is a significant step to help address these pressing concerns.

Solar Garden Lighting Has Many Benefits

You can take advantage of the free energy the sun provides by installing some solar garden lighting in your yard. With a little planning you can ensure you have enough light for your needs with minimal expense. There are many different types of lights to choose from and if you choose ones that run on solar energy you will enjoy the many benefits of this alternate energy source.

Walk around your home at night to see where you could use some additional lighting. If you plan ahead you can make sure the darker parts of your property are well lit without going over your allocated budget. Use a digital camera to help you work out where to best put the lights you choose. By choosing the right type of lights for each area around your home you can have the lights you need while keeping your costs down.

There are many different styles of lights and you will be able to find something to suit each of the areas around your home where you want to add lights. For your patio or deck you can use spot lights, lanterns or in-deck lights. You can put lights into or on the side of steps to make them safer and more visible. You can add a motion sensor security light to your entrances for some added security for your home. Garden stake lights are great in and around gardens and paths for some wonderful ambient light. You will find whatever you need for your garden lighting design.

Free energy from the sun is something you should be taking advantage of and solar garden lighting is a good way to start using this alternative energy source. The lights use the energy from the sun instead of electricity, so there is no ongoing power costs for you. No electricity means no cables or wires, which makes installation so simple, in most cases just push a stake into the ground in a position where the solar panel will be exposed to a lot of sun. Free, clean, renewable energy is a great way to enhance your landscaping.

Add some solar lights around your home and enjoy the benefits of environmentally friendly solar energy.

Installing Solar Panels at Home

Posted in Energy-Efficiency on April 14th, 2010 by Jim – Comments Off

The whole Earth depends on the sun’s energy. Trees do not grow without it and people will not be able to eat without the sun because crops will not grow and it would be impossible to raise livestock. But even with this information only a small percentage of the sun’s energy is used in homes and in our transportation systems. The good news is solar energy has been used by industrial companies for years now especially those operating in remote areas.

Installing sun-powered panels in your home is one great way to save on your energy bill and do your part in helping the environment at the same time. Make your home into a solar home and gain more energy than your house will ever need. The energy you can get from the sun can vary. If you live in a sunny place, you are likely to get a greater amount of energy compared to colder places. This type of energy is dependent on the weather so getting enough energy during those long, winter months can be a bit difficult.

Installing these panels is one good way to have a “green” house but getting solar panels can be a bit expensive because the competition is minimal and government regulations do not allow homeowners to install their own solar panels.  This is one of the major problems in the US today that is why not many people can have access to a solar home. In Europe this is not the case; many modern homes now have solar panels and no longer use up much electricity to maintain the heating system.

Apart from installing solar panels at home, you also need to make sure that you doors, windows and even your wall panels are energy efficient and do not have leaks. Preventing air coming from your cooling or heating system to leak to the outside is a good start for those who want to save on their energy bill. Before installing panels you may need to install insulation to parts of your home.

Solar Patio Lights – A Compromise

Posted in Garden on March 9th, 2010 by Jim – Comments Off

In recent times I have been investigating the possibility of using solar energy to power my home. It would be nice to eliminate the electricity bill, and I can’t think of any better reason to give solar power a shot. Of course, on top of that there is the fact that its an environment friendly energy source. To my disappointment, I have discovered that procuring and installing the equipment to convert to solar power, requires a substantial initial capital, and its for that reason that there has been a slow uptake in using these new technology. While the initial outlay in installing the equipment should be recovered in several years it is still quite an obstacle to overcome.

In researching the matter more, I came upon on an offer by earth 4 energy that indicated that the cost to go this route does not have to be quite as high as my initial research pointed to. Indeed, a mere couple hundred bucks instead of thousands, as was indicated in this promotional offer, is no hurdle at all. However, after carefully considering the available information on this matter, I have concluded that this is a scam. So alas, it appears that my ambitions of powering my home fully using solar power will not be realised any time soon.

Although I have resolved that it is just not feasible at this time to go fully solar, I have realised that this does not mean nothing can be done now. It is within my grasp to implement a partial conversion to solar power. For example, there are such things as solar lights for patio and garden. While a relatively small step, it is virtually hassle free, and does to some extent accomplish the purpose of reducing electricity costs, since I already am using electricity to light up the patio and backyard. Of course, there is still the added benefit of being friendly to the environment.

For the many who are in similar circumstances where the costs of going totally solar are prohibitive, I would recommend a compromise. Install solar patio lights in your garden for now, and wait for the price of indoor systems to come down to a more affordable level.
