Cheap Netbooks vs. Expensive Laptops

Posted in Computers and Technology on March 5th, 2011 by Jim – Comments Off

If you are looking for the perfect portable computer and you are torn between laptops and netbooks, this article might help be able to help you.

Netbooks vs. Laptops

1) Weight and Portability
If you are looking for a portable computer that doesn’t weigh that much, you should get a netbook. Since netbooks are smaller than laptops, they won’t add stress to your shoulders or hands if you put them in your bag, backpack or briefcase. You do not have to carry a separate bag because they can fit right in just that of a textbook or a big notebook. The heaviest netbook would probably just weigh around three pounds compared to a laptop that weighs somewhere between five to ten pounds.

Laptops are heavier because they have a larger screen and they also have CD and DVD players. You need to carry a separate bag (if you are carrying a small purse or briefcase) because laptops often require larger bags or carrying laptop case. For students who carry a lot of textbooks to school, carrying a laptop around will be a bigger burden.

2) Performance
Netbooks are for those people who need a portable computer for simple tasks such as typing, encoding and browsing the internet. Definitely, compared with laptops, the features of netbooks are basically simple. If you wish to do high-tech stuffs like picture and video editing, movie making and so on, choose a laptop. Some applications do not run in netbooks also because of the smaller memory so if you are installing an extensive application, a laptop is a better choice. For professional programmers, video designers and gamers, netbooks are not competent enough in terms of graphics, hard drive and processor speed.

3) Affordability
Since netbooks are smaller and with lighter features, they are of course a little less expensive compared with laptops. Netbooks would only cost you anywhere from $200 to $500. You can also get netbooks for less than $100 especially if they were pre-owned. To get cheap netbooks, simply search the internet for online stores that offer promotions. You should be able to find a discount netbook easily from big online retailer like Amazon. You can buy a netbook or a laptop directly only without the hassle of traffic and mall crowd. You just have to understand the specs and the policies of the netbook or the laptop before buying them. If you are not a techie, ask a friend, relative or anyone who is more knowledgeable in computers to check if the laptop or netbook you like would fit your budget and needs.

So have you decided which one to get?

This means that the best college student laptop for one student may be totally useless to another.

If this is your first laptop it is the best idea to stick with what you are familiar with. The big companies like Dell, Hewlett Packard, or Sony will custom build the best laptops for college students to fit your needs so you do not need to waste money on add-ons that you will never use. You can get anything from a high powered AMD or Intel Quad-Core to the scaled down basic Intel Celeron that many casual users opt for.

They do not have a great deal of power but they will serve for all of you internet needs and have a few other applications. The processors that are most common on these models are the Intel Atom, The Via Nano and the VIA C7-Mnd. They have limited processing power but will serve your basic needs for your first year in school. They are best used as portable internet systems.
