All About Kinect

When it comes to video games that use motion sensing to control the action on the TV, the Nintendo Wii was definitely revolutionary. While there had been other attempts, nothing came close to what the Wii has been able to accomplish. In response to this popularity, both Sony (for their Playstation) and Microsoft (for their Xbox 360) have come up with their different ideas for what they will do to fight back against the Wii. While Sony’s offering is a lot like the Wii’s, Microsoft has a whole new idea for for motion-controlled gaming, with their newest accessory called Kinect.

Kinect is a camera device that is actually two cameras in one. The first camera is a regular RGB camera to see you, and an infrared camera that can sense the distance and motion. Between these two cameras, and some high-end software, you are able to control the game on screen with your whole entire body.

On the current Kinect games list, there aren’t many games announced, but based on some of the promotional videos there are different ideas for games. One is a new, 3D take on the old brick breaker game. For this one, the balls come flying at you and you have to hit them with your hands, and head, and feet to send them back to hit the bricks. They also showed a fighting game that allows you to duck, dodge, punch and kick the screen to truly fight back. They have also showed racing games being used by imagining a steering wheel, and moving it around. Plus, once game developers get their hands on this technology, who knows what type of games we will see.

Although a Kinect release date hasn’t been set, they have announced that it will be released some time in Holiday 2010. I am excited for this new technology in the video gaming world, and you should be too!
