Posted in Sports on June 3rd, 2010 by Jim – Comments OffThere is no secret behind the fact that jumping high is very important for basketball and volleyball. So if you play either volleyball or basketball, you need to train to be able to get up as high as possible. Not everyone knows how to train in order to learn how to jump higher but a big key is doing plyometric exercises. These are the workouts that do a lot of jumping at super high heights and no rest in between reps. This means that you do rest a lot more in between sets though, so don’t forget that! Too many people do them the wrong way so be careful.
Many athletes in a variety of sports are wondering how they can jump higher or perhaps increase their vertical jump. A type of training program that is rapidly becoming more popular are the use of plyometric exercises. These routines teach one how to jump higher, to increase their jumping skills, their explosive power, and general all around strength.
One can buy a training program to teach them plyometrics. However, these can get quite expensive and general. Someone looking for a more individualized program can create their own routine using their choice of exercises.
A simple place to start is with squat jumps. Most athletes are already familiar with traditional squats, that work the thigh muscles. One can take this exercise a step further into plyometrics by adding a jump between squats.
Boxes are a helpful accessory that one can use in their plyo program. One can use a specialized box especially for plyometrics or simply find a sturdy box that will support their weight. Placing one foot on the box and launching themselves to the other side of the box creates an exercise called lateral box push offs.
A medicine ball is useful for upper body plyos. One can throw the ball a variety of ways to work their arms.
