The Effect Of Heroin On A User
Posted in Addictions on May 3rd, 2010 by Jim – Comments OffHeroin, made from the poppy plant, is one of the most dangerous drugs around. While it was once primarily manufactured in Asian countries and Afghanistan, it has been reported that there is an increase in the amount of heroin made both in the United Kingdom and the United States in recent years.
At the same time there has also been an increase in the number of users of heroin in these countries as well. While it was originally administered to patients in hospitals and used as a pain killer, it very quickly became apparent that the drug was far too powerful and far too addictive to use it that way. Unfortunately it found its way onto the street and it has been one of the most dangerous and difficult to control illegal drugs being sold.
Not only do users of heroin become addicted emotionally and mentally to the drug itself but their bodies also very quickly become addicted to it. This is what makes heroin so dangerous. It also makes it very difficult for a user to willingly give up using heroin as the effect it has on their body makes it almost unbearable for them.
Initially users feel an intense high or euphoric feeling when they inject the drug. That is the same feeling that they’re always seeking after every time they use the drug again. Shortly after taking heroin users often begin to feel quite tired and frequently nod off to sleep for short periods of time. Other ways to tell if someone has been using heroin is if their speech becomes slurred. They also generally show total disinterest in their surroundings and at what is going on around them.
Of course it is the long-term effects of heroin use that is the most serious. When it comes to physical damage, the internal organs particularly the heart and the liver are often damaged. The users also have problems with their veins due to repeatedly injecting themselves with needles. Also because many will reuse needles or use the same needle that someone else used, they frequently pass around infections such as HIV, AIDS, hepatitis etc.
Perhaps one of the most serious side effects of long-term heroin use is the frequency of a user overdosing and ultimately dying from that overdose.
