Is it a Good Idea to get a Biometric Gun Safe?

Posted in Home Security on May 13th, 2010 by Jim – Comments Off

If you’re asking yourself if it is a good idea to look into biometric gun safes than the answer is most definitely yes.  There are many advantages to securing your gun inside of a biometric gun safe.  There is a higher level of security, more control over access and a greater ease of retrieving your gun when it is needed.

The biometric technology that is used on a biometric gun safe allows you much greater control over access.  Most of the safes available on the market give you the ability to store multiple fingerprints inside the safes memory.  This way you can store fingerprints for multiple fingers off of multiple hands.  This also allows you to store fingerprints of other people whom you would like to provide access to your gun with.  This works very well if you would like to grant access to a spouse or someone else living with you in case of emergency.

Securing your gun inside of a biometric gun safe eliminates the problems that arise when using a safe that requires a key to open.  It’s always possible to lose keys or to have the wrong people find them.  If the store the key to your safe next to your safe it totally defeats the purpose of having your gun locked up in the first place.  It’s not possible to lose your fingerprints as they are always attached to you.  That is all you will need to open up a fingerprint gun safe.

When you need access your gun every second counts.  This is especially true if it is the middle of night and you suspect there’s an intruder inside your home.  All you will need to do is to wipe your finger across the scanning pad and you instantly have access to your firearm inside the safe.  You not need to worry about the searching around in the dark for keys or trying to remember an access code.  Sometimes if you’re in a stressful situation it can be difficult to remember the code and you would not be able to get your gun.

The biometric gun safe costs have gone down considerably since they were first introduced to the consumer market and seem like the smartest choice for storing your gun.

If you own a gun, then you have probably heard a 100 times that you should keep your gun in a safe place so it does not fall into wrong hands. That is an excellent statement and you should hear it 100 more times. You don’t want your pistol to be found by either a child or a criminal.

So how do you use your gun safe? It seems like that question would have an easy answer, but let’s explore all the different facets:

  • By their nature, gun safes are large metal boxes that are not airtight (unless you have firesafe), but they do attract a lot of moisture.  Because you gun is either all metal or at least (in the case of the polymer guns like the Glock), the major components are metal, they can and will rust.  Most stores that sell safes also sell a product called a desiccant.  This is a small bag or box that contain silica gel that you place in your safe to remove the moisture in the air.  You should buy a size that is appropriate for the square footage of you safe and follow the instructions to maintain the desiccant.
  • A gun that has been in prolonged storage should be cleaned before any use.  As the gun oils start to break down, they can gum up.  As that mixes with gun powder residue, dirt, and any moisture, it can cause the weapon to malfunction.
  • Different gun owners will have different opinions on whether your gun should be in the pistol safe loaded or unloaded.  They also debate if it should have a round chambered.  Consult your gun’s owner’s manual for any specifics related to storage.  Otherwise, do what you feel comfortable with depending upon your desire for quick access to the gun in the event of an emergency.

Storing a gun safely is a very important first step.  Using the above tips will help you protect your investment and safety.

The world has changed radically from the days that firearms were proudly displayed on racks on the walls, handguns in holsters slung over the backs of chairs and the old twenty two propped up in the corner. We now fear theft as even consumer firearms are pricey, custom and antique pieces are very valuable and all are easy to sell. Gun safes are not only indispensable for the security they provide; they are essential to lessen liability. California among other states has laws that hold the owner of stolen arms responsible for their theft and crimes that may be committed by them.

When purchasing a gun safe there are many things to consider. Things that you must take into account are the types and quantity of the arms you want secured, the dimensions of the safe, the interior layout, what steel gauge, proper fireproofing and the reputation of the manufacturer. Consult the insurance company that carries your policy and determine their guidelines so it can’t come back to bite you should there be a theft. Proper installation is a must and ideally gun safes should be securely bolted to a concrete base or wall studs as a second choice.

Get a Gun Safe That Meets Your Needs

When buying gun cabinets a larger size is preferable. Having to stuff handguns in corners of a t small safe can be very frustrating. Draw out a plan considering all the dimensions of your firearms and have a layout in mind. There are many sizes of steel utilized in the construction of gun safes and as a good rule, use nothing less than a wall thickness of 10-gauge steel with at least 8 gauge preferable. Fireproofing is a personal choice with ceramic wool being a first choice but if constructed properly, sheetrock is very effective. All safes should have anti tampering devices with extra armor to deter drilling and relocking pins. The exterior finish is important to the appeal and décor.
