Juicing For Bone Health

Posted in Alternative Health on July 21st, 2010 by Jim – Comments Off

Juicing is actually not only an excellent way to strengthen your bones, but also to nourish your body holistically. Basically, we are starving ourselves practically all the time without even knowing it. Well, ‘starving’ meant in a sense of being depleted of essential nutrients (not french fries and burgers!). Of course, living a healthy lifestyle and eating a healthy diet can go a long way. But nothing is as powerful and efficient as juicing, from a nutritional perspective.

Through juicing, we basically extract the vitamins, minerals and antioxidants from the produce or fruit and ‘injecting’ everything right into our bodies. And bone health can benefit tremendously from juicing on a regular basis. While we are young and healthy, it is hard to imagine that as we get older, our bones will become more fragile and unstable. But that’s exactly when we can lay the foundation for our bones to support us for the rest of our lives.

Below is a list of some juices, and why they are so important for bone health.

Strawberry Juice: when people are being asked what’s richer in Vitamin C, an orange or a handful of strawberries, most of them would go for the orange, right? Well, the truth of the matter is, that strawberries contain more Vitamin C than most of the citrus fruits. In addition to that, they also carry a variety of minerals – especially calcium – that are extremely important for bone health.

Pineapple Juice: another proven bone health supporter. First and foremost, the magnesium in this kind of juice is good for the connective tissue and the bone structure.

Lettuce Juice: that’s right, lettuce can be juiced, too. It holds the important Vitamin K which supports the production of osteocalcin, a protein good for bone tissue. This is vital for the prevention of osteoporosis! Furthermore, lettuce an excellent source of phosphorus and calcium, which again is crucial for bone health.

Carrot Juice: the omnipotent elixir. It’s hard to find anything that carrot juice is actually not good for. With regard to bone health, it is proven that this juice is highly potent in supporting the development of bone marrow.

However, all juices should be made at home from fresh produce and fruits. Buying them in the supermarket bears the risk of getting products with large amounts of sugar and other artificial substance that are detrimental to your health.

The Health Benefits of Fresh Juices

Many health professionals lay claim to how beneficial fresh fruit and/or vegetable juices can be for our health, well being and longevity. Jack Lalanne, the godfather of fitness, plus many health enthusiasts and celebrities all tout how much better they feel for drinking freshly made juice recipes. So how exactly do fresh juices benefit our health?

The key health benefits of fresh juices is almost the same as the many wonderful benefits of eating fruits and vegetables, with one exception, we lose out on the health benefits of fiber in our juices. However, the sacrifice of fiber gives us in return a greater abundance of vitamins, minerals, enzymes and antioxidants from fruits and vegetables.

Many antioxidants are actually unavailable for digestion when we eat fruits and vegetables because they are ‘tied up’ deeply in tough fibers and chewing only releases a small percentage of these antioxidants. When we juice fruits and vegetables, the juicing machine blade chops up and breaks down these fibers extensively and then discards the fiber. In the process a great percentage of the antioxidants are released into the resulting fresh juice.

In addition to releasing ‘extra antioxidants’ from produce, juicing provides us with even more nutrition just by the simple fact that you need at least several fruits or vegetables to prepare one glass of fresh juice. To make an apple juice, for example, you would need about 4 apples (depending on their size). That is more apples than we would eat in one go!

So a freshly made juice benefits us by providing us with a dense concoction of natural antioxidants that is unrivaled. Research shows that antioxidants are essential for protecting us from the condition of oxidative stress. Oxidative stress is a condition in which there are more free radicals in our bodies that the antioxidant we need to combat them. Oxidative stress generates excessive cell damage that can create cancer, heart disease, arthritis, macular degeneration and other degenerative disease. Oxidative stress will also greatly speed up the rate at which the body ages.

So it is good to know that the intense amount of antioxidants in fresh juices really does help to offset the risk of developing diseases and slow down the aging process!
