The Protection Provided By Quality Conservatory Roofs

Posted in Property on October 14th, 2010 by Jim – Comments Off

If you are looking for a room with a difference in your home, then the best thing you can do is to build a conservatory.  This room will allow you beautiful views to your garden and will provide an area with a very different atmosphere from the rest of the home.

The main reason that a conservatory feels different to other areas in the home is the amount of glazing that is present in the walls and roof.  A standard extension will give you the same extra floor space, but it is as it is described, only standard. There is nothing different to it that makes it stand out from the other accommodation in the residence.

Take conservatory roofs for example.  Where else in the home would you be able to have sunlight coming into you from above.  This is what makes conservatories so bright and airy, even on very overcast days or when it is raining.

There is something special about being in your conservatory, close to nature, when the rain is coming down outside or when it is very windy.  You have all the advantages of outdoor living and yet you are snug and warm in your sunroom.

Due to adverse weather you do need to pay attention to the materials that you are putting into your conservatory roof.  If these roofs are not well constructed they have a tendency to leak and this is something that you certainly want to avoid.  Not to be able to use your conservatory in the rain, or worse still, having to move furniture when it rains is not an option.

Always put good money into the materials and the construction of your sunroom roof.  In fact it is not just rain that you want to protect from.  A quality roof will also contain glazing that can protect from excessive sun as well. Harsh UV rays from the sun can do damage to the human skin, as well as to furniture and other items in a conservatory.

So go out and build that conservatory of your dreams.  But remember quality conservatory roofs do not come cheap but are worth the money.

Wooden Conservatories – Would You?

Posted in Home Improvement on September 1st, 2010 by Jim – Comments Off

The erection of a conservatory onto your home opens many opportunities for you to improve the layout of your existing home as well as getting more space for you and your family.  There are many different types of conservatories and conservatories are constructed from different materials.  Whether you favor wooden conservatories or conservatories made from uPVC could be a matter of personal choice, but could also depend on the age and style of your existing residence.

Knowing what size your conservatory should be is something that you should decide from the start and  in order to be able to do this you need to know what use you intend to make of the new space in your home.  If you require the extra space for an office for example, then you would possibly need a much smaller extension than if you wanted your conservatory for entertaining or for a living area for all of the family.

The location of the conservatory would also be dependant on the use you have in mind for the finished product.  Conservatories are very versatile spaces and can be used from anything such as a playroom for the kids to an area to hold a hot tub for relaxation time – however the location is all important.

There are three main materials used n the construction of conservatories.  These are timber, aluminum and uPVC.  All of these materials have advantages over the others.  uPVC conservatories are the market leader, due mainly to their cost competitiveness , ease of maintenance and energy efficiency.

Aluminum is a very strong product and security conscious homeowners may favor a structure comprised of aluminum for this reason.

Wooden conservatories are unique in that timber is a natural product that has a beauty of its own, is more environmentally friendly to produce and will become more beautiful with age. In many cases the choice of which type of conservatory material you select is a personal one and is a choice that you should take your time making.

Straight and Curved Glass Sunroom Styles

If you want to allow sunlight to flood into your home, the best way to achieve this is with a sunroom on the front or back of your house. What style of glass and the shape of this sunroom will depend not only on your taste and the shape of the house, but also on the climate of the region. For example in an area that receives heavy snowfall a slanted glass atrium or sunroom will be the recommended patio cover design because the snow will not so easily remain trapped like on a flat roof. However, in a sunny climate that does not receive snow you may choose a straight glass patio design that can be shaped in a variety of modern designs to suite the home.

Aside from straight glass or curved glass styles, there are also cathedral roof options for a patio enclosure that will work in snow laden areas because the roof is slanted to point in the center, or you may choose a freestanding conservatory style that is a sunroom which is round or octagonal and can be built as an add-on to the home or in the garden or as a pool house. With the sunroom you can use conservatory blinds to ensure you have adequate shade on sunny days.

Aluminum Sunrooms and Patio Covers

No matter what style, the newest aluminum sunrooms and outdoor patio covers are the most durable in both heat and cold because the exterior can be metal and glass while the interior may be wood. These sunroom patio covers are also available in styles that incorporate screens so that the windows or doors may be left open in the summer and still not allow bugs to enter, just the fresh air. The main difference from a patio cover and a sunroom is that a cover will be lattice or a solid roof without walls, whereas a sunroom or screen room will be closed, an enclosed patio cover that does not allow the elements indoors. These are extensions to the house and add livable space like an extra room that could well be an office, dinning room or studio not just a deck cover.

Glass Atrium or Sunroom Patio Cover Enclosures

Glass atrium or sunroom patio cover enclosures are expensive and do not usually come in prefabricated kits, so you will need to get a price quote from a contractor. However you can get some good ideas from books like: Porches and Sunrooms: Planning and Remodeling Ideas by Roger German and the Better Homes and Gardens Porches & Sunrooms: Your Guide to Planning and Remodeling by John Riha or the handy Complete Patio & Deck Book: Creative Ideas & Fabulous Fix Ups from Lowe’s Home Improvement written by Sunset Books.
