The Benefits of Wooden Carports For Your Property

Posted in Home on March 13th, 2010 by Jim – Comments Off

One of the biggest benefits to wooden carports as compared to those made from other materials is obvious – they’re made out of wood.  Why is this such a big benefit?   Well, for one wood is a very durable and reliable material.  Many structures are built from it because it has proven that it can last the test of time as long as you look after it properly.  The material is durable, strong and long lasting and it can withstand a great deal of weight so it can hold up almost any type of structure you can build.

Another reason that it is so beneficial to build a structure to house your car or other vehicle that is made out of wood is that the end result will be much more attractive than those built from metal, aluminum or simply a few plastic poles with a canopy overhead.  This is especially important if you are building this garage-like structure near your house, since you want it to look good while being functional.  If you use wood, you can design the structure to match your house by staining or painting it, and you can be sure that a well finished design is going to add value to your property.

Contrary to popular opinion, when you use this natural material you can also build a very solid structure which will stand up to anything nature cares to throw at it, protecting whatever lies underneath. Most carport canopy designs have a covering overhead and some may have one or more sides as well to provide added protection or storage space.  But when you use wood to construct the structure and add sides, you basically create a fully contained building that can stand up to the elements of the weather, provide storage and be a secure location.  If you put a set of doors on it, you can even turn it into an actual garage, although many people opt to leave it open so it is easy to just drive a car in and out of the protected covering.

Having A Successful Carport Sale

Posted in Home on January 15th, 2010 by Jim – Comments Off

Having a successful garage sale or carport sale starts with a little organization. You only need to have a few things planned out for it to go off without a hitch. Here are a few simple things to take into consideration before implementing your sale.

Picking The Date(s)

If you have quite a lot of things to sell, then you should consider having the carport sale for 2 days. Chances are you will not sell everything on the first day and this increases your odds of getting rid of more stuff. Weekends are the most desirable day however you could have your sale on a Friday and Saturday to take advantage of those that may not work or have furlough days on Fridays. It is best to stay clear of having your sale on a holiday or holiday weekend where most people are out of town or spending their time hanging out with family. Also, make sure to check the forecast to try and get an idea of what the weather will be like. Clearly this is more of a seasonal thing to consider.

Advertising The Sale

It goes without saying that this is a very crucial part. Without advertising there will be no customers. Tell your friends, family and co-workers about your big sale and ask them to tell some of their friends as well. Print up some nice colorful fliers to hand out to them and to post on bulletin boards in your area. These don’t have to be fancy or extravagant fliers, just something that clearly states the day of your sale, the time, and the location. Put signs up around your neighborhood, ensuring that you check your local laws regarding signage. Make sure to take the signs down when you are done as you do not want random people stopping by your home thinking there is still a sale going on.

Day Of The Sale

When laying out all the items, try to group all similar items together. If you are selling clothes, if possible see if there is a nice area where you can hang them. If you have some extra poles laying around try and be creative and set up a hanging display. Put all little knick knacks on a table for ease of viewing and any furniture in the same area. Make sure that you have enough coins and small bills and that all the items are clearly labeled with a price. If you do not want to price every item, try a color coding system.

A little planning goes a long way. Being prepared will mean you have a successful carport sale.

There are two main kinds of metal carports available on the market today. You can choose either an attached carport which must be installed adjacent to an existing building or a free-standing carport which can be installed anywhere on your property as long as it is permitted by your local building codes. Either kind will add to your property’s value, protect your car, and give you additional storage space.

Start by checking building codes, and then make sure the place where you want to do your construction is free of sewage pipes and gas or water lines. You will need to lay out the plan for you carport using string, and mark the places where posts will go. You’ll need four posts for a one car carport and six to eight for double carports. For the details of how you will construct your car port, check online for how-to articles. You should have no problem getting the information you need; it is amazing how much easier the internet has made it to do all kinds of home improvement research.

Once you have finished the basic construction of your shelter, hopefully a double carport, you should add fascias to make your carport look more professional. It is also advisable to add gutters and storm drains so runoff from storms does not get inside your carport. And of course paint it inside and out. Voila!
