Safety Glasses And Work Related Health
Safety is talked about in the work place more today than it has been in several years. When I first started out as a mechanic you would never find the techs wearing their safety glasses unless the boss was walking around. I use to watch guys put themselves in situations that were pretty risky, and we had an incident were one of our techs was killed for not following the proper guidelines when a truck ran him over. This caused us to make drastic changes in the way we view safety. We started implementing what we call people based safety, and we have seen a real improvement in our incidents rates. When we give a tech their yearly review we make sure and talk about safety, and they can get a below if they are not working safely or looking out for their co-workers. When everyone takes safety seriously you really see the benefits in the entire company.
We did a study for the past three years on how much our reportable incidents were costing the company each year and also did an incident assessment of the accidents. We deal with Celtic Health Insurance and the report they provided us showed we spent approximately $258,000.00 on accidents that happen in the workplace that could have been avoided. With health insurance costs going up so much each year we knew we had to do something. We started people based safety in April 2006 and since then we have seen a 30% drop each year in our claims. When you think about the dollar amount saved just by changing how people think about safety we can really see that the system works. I think about my buddy Jason and wonder what if someone had stopped him from cutting corners to perform his job; I know he would still be with his family today.
