Raise a Healthy child by Encouraging These 5 Physical Activities

Possibly one of the most important and yet underestimated roles of an adult is sending your children forth from your home with an affinity for physical fitness and activity.  An active lifestyle should be lifelong, and the best way to make that happen is start out on the right foot.  Here are 5 ways to encourage that active nature in your child.

1.  Team Sports

In my opinion, one of the best things a parent can do with their children, starting at a very young age, is get the involved in sports.  While the obvious health benefits are there for anyone to see, sports do so much for a growing person.  They captivate the imagination enough to become a lifelong endeavor, teach a child to be around other people and socialize, distract them from bad influences, give them a reason to behave, and teach them about goals.

2.  The Daily Walk

A simple way to keep your child active that any parent can do is incorporate a daily walk into their routine.  Not to mention this is something most parents need as well.  Take a half hour stroll down the road in the morning before bringing them to school or in the evening after dinner.  This is a great lifetime activity for your child and gives them a chance to unwind and think about what is going on currently in their life.  It can also be a great opportunity for you to bond.

3.  Fun in the Water

Swimming is one of the healthiest activities for a person.  It works many different muscle groups at once while at the same time providing cardiovascular activity.  If you have a lake, river, or ocean nearby, make frequent trips there a regular part of life.  If not, find the nearest pool, even if it means signing up at a gym for access.

4.  The Outdoors

The wild outdoors hold a lot of allure for the child imagination, and this is something you should tap into while they’re still young and make it a lifelong fascination.  There are plenty of things about nature that scare any parent, but the benefits it holds for children far outweigh the risks by a long shot.

Hiking and camping are simple and fun, and as children get older they may even want to try out more active stuff like fishing, sport climbing, or kayaking.  Try to quiet your fears, get them adequate instruction, and make outdoor activity a lifetime obsession.

5.  Your Yard

Finally, we can inspire physical activity at home in our own little yards simply be creating an environment conducive to childhood. Trampolines are one of the most compact, fun, and physically active additions to a yard.  Children and teenagers alike love trampolines, and just this one piece of equipment can keep them jumping around for their entire childhood.  Other additions can be a simple swing, a playset, or just teaching them creative games to play in the yard.

Never underestimate the role activity plays in a child’s life.  It can make all the difference in raising them into a happy healthy adult before you send them out into the world.  If you are not very active or healthy yourself, make this a joint effort, and get healthy together.  That can be one of the best ways to bond with your child and work towards a brighter future.
