Pros and Cons of Soft Guitar Cases

If you ever take your guitar out of your house, even just a 5 minute walk to a friends house, you should have a guitar case for it. It is going to protect it from any damage, rain and dirt etc. These things can reduce the life of you guitar and cost you big money in repair bills in the future. A soft guitar case might not be ideal for everyone or everything, but they do serve a purpose, its certainly better than no case at all.

A soft case is at the lower end of the scale for storing your guitar. They are not the safest way of transporting your guitar around, but they do a decent job. In some instances they might be a better option than a hard case.

Compared with a hard guitar case, the softer version is going to be considerably lighter. This makes for more comfortable transportation. You might have to walk with your guitar quite a bit, so you don’t want to be carrying something that’s going to pull your arms off on the way to practice. Along with the rest of the gear you have to carry, every few pounds you can save is going to be a great relief. For the times you are at home and not using your case, being soft it is easy to fold away and store. It will fold into something half or quarter it original size and fit nicely into a drawer or cupboard.

Soft cases also cost considerably less than the hard equivalent. If you have only just got your first acoustic guitar and need an acoustic guitar case to start you off, a soft case is just the thing. It saves you from spending a fortune and a few months down the line you decide you no longer want to play guitar.

Its not all good news for soft cases sadly, they do have downsides. They offer no protection against direct impacts. If something hits into the bag its going to right through to the guitar and do some damage. If you do decide to take the soft case to a gig then there are chances it’s going to get damaged by all the people moving your gear around or knocking it over.
Being cheaply made and using cheaper materials, a soft case isn’t going to be as durable as a hard case. Although if you do look after it, it should still last you good length of time. But if you give it a hard time its not going to last anything as long as a good quality hard case.

There are pros and cons to having a soft case for you guitar, as you can see.
