Prepare for Back Surgery and Recovery
No surgery is a walk in the park but surgery on the back in particular may require more preparation in order to remain comfortable before, during and after the operation. Here are some things you can do beforehand to ensure comfort while you wait for the surgery, to prepare you for back surgery, and to ease your back surgery recovery:
- If exercise is possible, do some light exercise everyday. Even mild physical activity has been known to help reduce back pain.
- Eat healthy foods and don’t overeat as it will cause more discomfort than you are already feeling.
- Make your bed or sleeping arrangements as comfortable as possible. Arrange pillows and add or take away some. Sleep with a hot water bottle of cold one if that helps you.
- Only if absolutely needed, take pain killers to help with the pain and take them only if the doctor gives the okay to do so.
- Try to keep your life stress free as stress has been known to cause pain and other health problems.
- Right before your surgery, follow any instructions given to you by the doctor. It may be beneficial for you to meditate to help you relax. Have someone else drive you to the hospital and also to drive you home when you are ready to do so.
Following these steps and the instructions provided to you by your doctor will ensure that your operation goes smoothly but what about when you wake up? Here are some ways to help you recover sooner and get back on your feet:
- Again, follow any instructions given by your doctor.
- Arrange your bed and living room area so that you are at your most comfortable.
- Again, exercise, even if it is only for a few minutes a day, is crucial!
- Have someone who either lives in your home or can come by when needed to help you with any daily activities you are unable to do yourself.
- There are many foods, vitamins and other natural supplements that can help in the healing process. Do some research to find out which ones may be most beneficial for you.
Back surgery preparation is important to ensure you get better and back on your feet in an acceptable amount of time. The sooner the better!
