Newborn Baby Clothes – Not Just Green or Yellow.

There used to be a time when newborn baby clothes that were purchased in advance of the birth came in only two colors other than white:  those colors were either green or yellow. Some outfits were either plain green or plain yellow and some were a combination of the two colors. The clothing was either solid or striped, but never flowered. The colors were neutral, as were the patterns or designs. You could put the same outfit on a boy or a girl, and it would look just as good.

Once ultrasounds were developed and became common practice, newborn baby clothes were transformed from green and yellow to a rainbow of colors. They were then available in a variety of styles and designs too. Women were able to find out whether they were having boys or girls, and expectant mothers could fill their child’s closet and dressers with blue or pink clothing even before the baby was born. Family, friends, and co-workers knew what color clothing to buy for the baby shower and when they visited the hospital for the first time after the baby was born.

Not many clothing manufactureres produced clothing that was gender specific, because they knew that most women liked to be prepared and have their child’s clothing before he or she was born. They also knew that baby showers were genrally held months before the child was due to arrive. There are now pink dresses, sleepers, outfits, socks, and bibs for girls; and blue trousers, sleepers, outfits, socks, and bibs for boys. Girls’ clothing may be flowered or don the word, “princess”. Boys’ clothing is usually decorated with dump trucks or frogs or jungle animals. Manufacturers of baby clothing now offer a wide variety of items for newborns.

Knowing the sex of your unborn child allows you to prepare for his or her arrival. You can have your child’s wardrobe purchased, washed, dried, pressed, and put away before he or she is even born. This has always been the case, but being able to purchase clothing for a specific gender has not. Ultrasound technology made buying pink or blue possible.
