Movies And Magic Film
The biggest fantasy movies of the past decade have undoubtedly been the Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter series, but if you’re in the mood for more movies and magic but have had your fill of Gandalf and Dumbledore, there are a whole host of movies from Hollywood that should get your wand waving.
If you’re looking for something recent and quite similar to the Rings and Potter you might want to check out some of the movies that have been released in their wake. The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe and its sequel, subtitled Prince Caspian, are based on the first two books in the series of children’s fantasy novels by C.S. Lewis, in which a group of children stumble upon the mystical land of Narnia where they encounter friendly magical animals, including the titular Lion, a charismatic prince, and of course a wicked witch. In a similar vein, the Nicole Kidman-starring The Golden Compass features an orphan embarking on a magic adventure at the North Pole, complete with talking polar bears!
You might have already heard of or seen the Narnia movies and The Golden Compass because they’re relatively new, so why not try out a few magicmovies from a bit further back? Willow came from Lucasfilm Ltd. in 1988, and as you might goes down a bit like a healthy concoction of Lord of the Rings crossed with Star Wars. The little Willow teams up with a wizard and a rogue warrior (played by Val Kilmer in his heyday) to protect a baby from an evil queen that wants to stop her destiny. If you’re looking for something a little darker you can check out 1985′s Legend starring Tom Cruise and directed by Ridley Scott fresh off of Blade Runner and Alien featuring princesses, unicorns, and a frightening demon.
How about something a little lighter? Hocus Pocus from 1993 is a hilarious family-friendly movie with magic about three ditsy witches that also makes for great Halloween viewing. The Princess Bride is a delightful 1987 fantasy flick that’s as funny as it is magical. It’s a literal bedtime story with, of course, a bride princess, plenty of magic, and even Andre the Giant! Though especially popular with girls, Bride is wholesome entertainment for all.
The above-mentioned movies should be a great start for those looking for movies with magic.
