Medical Billing Work: How Can I Do It From Home?
If you are in the medical bill review industry, you know that it is financially lucrative. Medical coders and billers make pretty good money for doing something that becomes second nature after a few years of experience. And the best part is that the healthcare industry is expanding which is creating more demand for good medical coders.
So how does this apply to you? Well, if you have worked for a medical review company for a while, you know how the financials break down. Your company receives a contract and a company hands over their medical budget to you. You are in charge of saving the company money (making sure they are not being overcharged or being fraudulently billed) while you their medical claims. You company makes money for each billed processed and takes a large cut of any money that is saved at the end of the contract. Let me tell you, for a company that has good medical coders on staff, they will be making a lot of money.
But why should you be paid pennies when the company is making hundreds? What makes them so different from you? At one point, they were a small company too struggling to prove they could save large companies money on their medical costs. You have the knowledge too, and if you have the drive, you can set up your own medical bill review business from home to get started.
The first thing you need is experience. If you do not have experience and understand how the actually work is done, then it is going to be incredible difficult for you to be successful. So, before you start your own business, go work for a medical bill review business for a couple of years and learn the business. Learn how new business is brought in, how the work is done, and how the money is made. This is a great way to get paid to learn the business.
The next part is setting up your infrastructure. You know things like computers, printers, scanners, office supplies, a desk, comfortable chair, lights, etc. Most importantly, you have to figure out what medical billing software you will be using to do your actual medical billing work. If you do not have one in mind, it is safer to go with the software provider at your previous company.
The last and most important part is something everyone can develop. It is called “hustle”. Perseverance is the key to success. You will experience some hard times. Ask anyone who has ever started a business and they will tell you all the terrible stuff that they went through. But you know what, they will they kept going and kept a positive frame of mind. People will think and call you crazy, but you know you have what it takes to be successful. You know the job, you know the industry, and most importantly, you can save your potential clients a lot of money. Translate that in your meetings to get new clients.
