Installing Acoustic Insulation in a New Room
When planning to build a new room that is going to contain acoustic insulation there are some key aspects which you should consider. It is likely that the room will need to be framed specifically for the type of acoustical insulation you are planning on using and the floors, windows, doors, and even the ceiling will have to be handled all together differently. There are many aspects of a room which can be greatly improved with the right materials to truly achieve a good sound proof environment.
When framing the walls they have to be changed from the standard single stud to a double stud setup that leaves a space in between each. This setup will allow for acoustic sound insulation to be inserted in that space that is left open. You could also just use core frame metal studs but this is more expensive and they are much harder to work with than the standard wood. If there are going to be loud noises coming from above the newly added room or if you want to protect rooms above the newly added room from noises, sound proof insulation will have to be installed in the attic or ceiling space above the room that is being insulated
If the floor of your room is over an open basement that is going to present noise issues the floors will have to be insulated in a special way. All of the walls that are put in will have to be installed on top of ¼ inch foam pads that will dampen noise. The floors will also have to be insulated thoroughly with sound proofing insulation. This is to make sure that no sounds will be able to come in or get out through the floor. After all of these measures have been taken your room can finally be said to be sound proof.
If after all of this the room is still not soundproof enough there is noise reducing drywall that can be installed to further reduce sounds. Denser doors and double insulated windows can also greatly improve the space.
Acoustic insulation materials have almost become an art form and there are many different ways to achieve the silent room that you have always dreamed of. With a little bit of hard work, some research, and the proper materials your new room can easily become that far away oasis that you have always dreamed of.
