How to program the TiVo Remote Mute Feature
The invention of the TiVo has created several whole new ways to watch TV. The addition of a very large hard drive that allows you to record and save a large number of shows or movies, even when you are not home. Other features like the ability to stop a TV show that is currently running, back it up to catch a scene that you missed while you were in the kitchen or that you want to see it again. The main problem with the TiVo DVR is the very complex remote control. There are a great number of different and often irritating sounds and volume fluctuations. The only way to fix this problem is with the remote by altering the settings.
The first step is finding the small gray button in the center of the remote. It is the mute button. Press it first. This will mute all sound. Once that is done you go to C:/Documents and Settings/All Users/Application Data/Snapstream/Beyond Media/Sounds. This file allows you to change specific sounds or mute them totally. You can also add sounds that are easier to listen to. You can also use the “Slow” button to silence sounds during commercials. This button is located just under the “pause” button. This button will not mute menu sounds however. You have to follow the above path to do that.
The small green “menu” button near the bottom also allows you to make much more detailed changes to the amount and quality of sound coming from your TiVo. Just look for the A/V options and change the balance. If you are using your stereo speakers for sound in many cases you can manipulate them to control the sound. Remember that your TiVo Box needs to be programmed to include your entire sound system, not just the television or media player. The good thing is that with TiVo you can manipulate both you television and stereo with the remote.
