Help Your Child Get Started With A Craft Business

Children can be so creative with their art and projects. Often, as my 8-year-old does, they wonder if they could actually sell their crafts make some money. Many times, creative artsy children will have people, such as their friends, who want to have what your child has made. This often times turns a bulb on in a kids head that they may be able to sell them and make money. It is a natural humanistic instinct, to make money that is. If this is an idea your child has, it is okay for them to have this “want” and desire to make money. Some children will just have it earlier on than others. Since there are no real legal jobs for kids under 16, you can help them get started with their business venture as soon as they are ready, no matter how young. It is okay to instruct them to move forward with their ideas, and you can even help them to become successful with it!

There are many types of items that children can create with intentions to sell. Even if it is not the greatest work of art, children will often have no problems selling their cute pieces. Adults often think it is adorable, and are willing to help a little scout. Help your child decide what may be the best items to create. Think of your target buyers, if it will be adult friends and family, make it an item that will appeal to adults, but in a cute crafty kid way. Some ideas to spring off of would be to create jewelry, paint and decorate shirts, or even have them make pet rocks for adults to use in the office as paperweights! The ideas are endless, and a simple search on the web will show your child tons of creative ideas. You child will need the items bought for them to be able to complete most crafts, however it will be up to you to decide if you want them to pay you back for those items. It may be a good learning opportunity for your child to have them see how money really works by being required to pay you back. Although, if your child is very young, it may be too early for such a real-life lesson.

The next step is to find buyers for your child’s creative projects. You can ask them to be the salesperson. They can offer to sell to your friends, their family or their friends. Some children are even interested in going all out by setting up booths at festivals or local sporting events. Some children may be crafty enough that they could sell their items at flea markets, or even have a yard sell featuring their items.

Even if your child is young and is only going to be selling to relatives or friends, they can still turn pretty good profits, especially considering their age. Use your creativity to come up with ways to teach you child how kids can make money.
