Flat Roman Shade

A traditional flat roman shade, or roman blind as it is often referred to, is a simple but elegant tailored window treatment, often made from a comparatively light weight fabric. When the roman blind is raised, it folds up into systematic and neat horizontal pleats. The flat roman shade gets its name from its quality of lying flat against a window sill when it is lowered. A mounting board is used as attachment on the window to hang the roman blind and can be to the interior or exterior of the window frame. These are easy to make at home as they require simple materials and minimal labor.

With their neat and sophisticated lines, these are an interior designer’s favorite option to decorate a window in the most stylish way. While these shades have the look and feel of a drapery, they can very well serve as cellular shades or blinds. As they are made up of a woven fabric, they can easily be lowered or raised like blinds. When fitted outside window frame, they are used as standalone window treatment. Otherwise, if they are fitted to the inside of the window frame, they can be coupled with curtains and/or top treatment for a layered effect. The cloth used for this is usually lined. These blinds are of best quality when made of material ranging from light weight to medium. The styles for making these shades can vary from plain to pointed roman shades. Another classification of their styles includes teardrop (hobbled), flat fold and relaxed. They provide the user with great flexibility through options like top down/bottom up and their continuous loop of cord.

These blinds are suited for any setting whether elegant or casual and they provide a sense of privacy by letting in light from outside. Depending on their length and quality, their price may vary between $50 and $450.
