Finding Hair Restoration For Women
Historically, women with hair loss problems have had one option: cover it up. We could either wear a hat or scarf or we could buy a wig and cover the problem up that way. No way was a woman supposed to talk about hair loss because that was not a proper thing to do. Because of this subject being taboo, hardly any research has gone into hair restoration for women while men have had several products and procedures perfected for them. Women were forced to live with the problem instead of having a treatment which was tailored to our needs. This has now changed with Minoxidil for Women.
Minoxidil is a drug which has been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of hair loss. Originally this drug was developed to treat high blood pressure. The mechanism by which it did this was by the enlargement of the tiny blood vessels in the body known as capillaries. The thinking was that by increasing the cross section of these small vessels there would be less restriction for the blood flow and thus the heart would not have to work as hard to pump blood. In effect the blood would flow easier so there would be less pressure required from the heart muscle and thus the blood pressure would decrease. It actually worked but a beneficial side effect was noticed during clinical trials.
Men in the trials who were experiencing male pattern baldness noticed a lessening of the effects of the hair loss from this medical condition. It seemed as though the Minoxidil was helping to grow hair as well as lower blood pressure. Further tests proved this out.
In this case women were also included in the trials and it appeared as though the drug worked as a female hair restoration product also. It was found that men needed a 5% solution for optimum treatment and women a 2% mixture. But this was the first time women had a treatment which specifically dealt with our hair loss. This is still the only treatment approved by the FDA.
