Copper Repiping – How Much Does it Cost?

If you are a homeowner living in a home over 40 years old, there is a great chance that you may need an upgrade to your plumbing system.  Copper repiping is an option to consider. Older homes tend to have plumbing systems that were built using galvanized steel piping.  The problem with this is that many times the hard water in the city water system builds up calcium and other deposits over those many years and essentially “clogs” the capacity of the pipe. When this happens, many homeowners discover that they lose water pressure for showers, laundry machines, dishwashers and outside garden hoses. This can be a frustrating situation and one that is fixable.

I personally have gone through several upgrades of my plumbing systems in my years of home ownership.  One of the first questions I often get asked when one of my friends inquires about these projects is “How much does a copper repiping cost?” The answer of course is …it depends. First of all, if you can do it yourself, you’ll be able to save a lot of money because of the reduction in labor costs.  You must be an expert though if you want to try this type of project. Plumbing is certainly not something to mess with if you are an amateur.

I can say that my small bathroom whichwas about 250 sq ft cost approximately $1400.00 to replace just the copper pipe.  This project included completely ripping out all the plumbing and replacing the main line which ran up from the basement as well as the shower line with both hot and cold water valves. Also we replaced the toilet fill line and valve and then ran additional pipe off the main shower line to be able to feed the faucet. I used a single handle faucet which was more in tune with my design wishes, but we still needed both a hot and a cold water pipe feed. All in all, if you too need to consider upgrading your galvanized plumbing, it might make sense to get a local plumber or repipe specialist to come to your home for a custom quote.  In the end that will be the most accurate way to get a price on the copper piping upgrade.
