Cleaning the Blades of the Metal Band Saw

If you generally make use of a metal band saw like a Clarke metal cutting band saw then you must ensure proper maintenance of the metal band saw blades at all times to lengthen the durability and life of the band saw blade and also to ensure perfect cutting. It is also very unsafe to use a band saw when the blade is not clean because it can cause injury from flowing particles that will harm the user of the band saw. It is not very difficult to clean out the blades of the metal band saw but the use of proper cleaners is the most important part of the whole procedure because you cannot use something that will be too harsh for the blades and will harm them.

This is also one reason why you should not make use of metal tools to scraping the dust and particles off of the blades which many workers are likely to do. Even if the damage is not visible to the naked eye, the damage will still be just as dangerous and can be the cause of sever injury as well structural integrity failures which is a major flaw. The first step to cleaning your metal band saw blades is to get a household container or perhaps a bucket and fill it all the way with Kerosene oil. Since this is very flammable stuff, all the cautions required to use flammable items should be taken before you begin. Instead of Kerosene you can also make use of Simple Green concentrate which should only be used according to packaging directions to ensure safety.

Once the container is filled with either of these substances, the metal band saw blade should be immersed into the liquid and then kept this way at least overnight so the liquid can soak up the dust and other gunk. The next day, these blades should be taken out from the container carefully and the rest of the substance should be disposed off properly, so as not to cause any injury or harm due to its flammable nature. The blades should then be checked out for any remainder residue. If there is some residue left, the best way to tackle this is to make use of Teflon-safe scrubbers or even scrapers to carefully remove the residue. Also make sure that these scrubbers and scrapers are kept in the tool shed after this since they cannot be kept near regular food items and cooking utensils.

Once you are done with the scraping, give the blades a good rinse in water and then let them dry out naturally by keeping them on top of a soft cloth or a thin surface made with newspaper. Once dry, the clean metal band saw blades should be given a coat of WD-40 which will protect the saw blade for a long time and provide it with a longer life. It is very important to consider that metal band saw blades can be very dangerous to work with so care should be taken in each cleaning process to not get injured.
