Antique Engagement Rings And Jewellery – The Gemstones

Posted in Jewelry on February 19th, 2011 by Jim – Comments Off

Antique engagement rings and antique pieces of jewellery were often set with gemstones such as diamonds, emeralds and rubies. This article looks at some of the gemstones which were not as widely used in these items of jewellery.

The mineral beryl has a number of different varieties, emerald being the most popular and well-known of these. There is however an equally attractive variety of beryl and this is called aquamarine. This gemstone is pale blue in colour and some older examples may have foil applied to the back of the stone to improve colour and brilliance. Some examples may have been heat-treated to improve the depth of colour.

The colour of citrine can be anything from a pale yellow to orange or brown. Citrine is a variety of crystalline quartz which is sometimes misidentified as topaz. The jewellery of the 19th and 20th centuries often incorporated citrine in its designs.

The blue-white variety of feldspar known as moonstone has an attractive sheen known as adularescence. Moonstone is often shaped into a flat-sided dome shape known as a cabochon, as this shows it off particularly well. Mines in Sri Lanka and India supplied most of the moonstone seen in antique jewellery.

Milky opals have an attractive mixture of colours when they are high quality examples, showing red, green and blue colouration. Poorer quality milky opals have a mainly white colour. There are other varieties of opal in addition to the milky opals, some other types being Mexican fire opals and black opals.

Although garnet has a reputation for being deep red in colour (garnet of this colour is often seen in antique engagement rings) it occurs in several colours. Almandine garnet is purplish-red in colour and pyrope garnet is deep red. There are also green garnets called demantoid garnets (the most expensive type), and orange-red varieties known as hessonite garnet.

Art Deco engagement rings were often set with a colourless variety of quartz known as rock crystal. It was popular with jewellers as it was inexpensive and easy to cut into the geometric shapes which Art Deco jewellery is known for.

Things to Ask Online Sellers Before Buying a Pocket Watch

Posted in Jewelry on February 9th, 2011 by Jim – Comments Off

Most pocket watch collectors get their products online. Buying pocket watches from online merchants are easier because you will not have to endure traffic. You can just sit on your couch, browse through the Internet and click on whichever you want to buy. The Waltham pocket watch is just one brand which online merchants sell. However, the main problem with buying pocket watches online is dubious sellers, as well as fakes which are really plenty.

You have to scrutinize the authenticity of the pocket watch as well as the quality of the seller. You would not want to invest in something which is a fake. Pocket watches cost a lot of money and it is only right that you get your money’s worth. There are various sellers who dupe people and these sellers sell things which they do not even possess. There are many questions which you should ask a seller before finally hitting that “pay now” button.

You should ask the seller about the specifications of the watch. A good seller should be able to give you a complete detail of the pocket watch you are interested in. He or she should also be able to answer all questions about the specifications of the pocket watch. What is the condition of the pocket watch physically? A good seller should post pictures, as well as macro shots of the pocket watch which is for sale without the customers requesting so. Does the watch have nay mechanical problems? You should know this before paying for the pocket watch. You want a watch which is working condition. You do not want to pay for a broken watch unless you explicitly agree to pay for one.

It is also important to know if the watch has been opened, if any part has been replaced and of it has been cleaned. Ask how much the repair cost and what was done to the watch during the repair process. A pocket watch which has an interesting history is also very attractive and it might fetch a higher price too.

SOMEWHERE IN BETWEEN

One has many acquaintances in life. Some are true, most are not. There are also few whom you can call friends. But do you know what keeps friendship genuine? It’s the fact that with real friends, your life will be more meaningful and worth living for.

My name is Belle and I’m 20. I have many friends but among them all there is only one that I surely consider true. His name is Vince. He lives three houses away from ours for five years now and still counting. Actually, he is eight years older than me but whenever we’re together it really doesn’t seem so. He is just so juvenile that sometimes I act as if I’m older. Perhaps that is how it should be. I remember the day when we first met, we were suddenly hooked with each other as if we’ve been friends for so long already. Weeks after that, I celebrated my 15th birthday and I was happy because he showed me a pair of silver rings.  He said that he bought it for me and for him as well as a sign of our friendship. I was so delighted then. From that day on, we became best buddies. I am like a little sister to her. He used to walk with me to the park after school during weekdays, and we spend the weekends at either of our houses. I still can’t figure how we became so close that other people think we’re into some intimate relationship. But in reality, he doesn’t treat me like a girlfriend; I’m just like a sister to her. On my 20th birthday, he gave me a charm bracelet. It’s the most precious gift that I have ever received. He always makes me feel special and maybe that is why I’m so comfortable with him.

I don’t know what I really feel about him. We are so close like brothers and sisters but that’s all. It’s like I can’t live without him. But anyhow, I don’t consider it love either, maybe just somewhere between love and companionship.

Gucci Watches For Men: Gift Buying Tips

Posted in Jewelry on February 3rd, 2011 by Jim – Comments Off

One of my favorite material gifts that I ever got from my wife has to be my watch. I wear it every day and not a day goes by that I am not reminded about how thoughtful she is. I have no idea how she picked it out, but she really found one that I love (or do I love it because she gave it to me?). No matter the reason, there is no doubt that a new watch is a great gift to give your husband. Below is some watch buying advice to help you in your search.

The easiest way to narrow down the selection of all the watches available on the market is to pick a price. And while everyone’s budget is different, I generally advise people to look in the 500 dollar and up range. This will guarantee that the watch is high quality watch that will be trouble free for years to come, but it also will lend that status that comes along with a nice men’s watch.

The next thing that it comes down to is style. Now this can be a tough one depending on what the guy likes, what he already has in his collection, etc. I personally like the Gucci watches for men. Their collection is fairly small (as far as watch companies go) but there are just enough to offer a wide selection that would appeal to many different men. For instance, the i-Gucci is very fashionable and if he is someone who is concerned about status and appearance as well as being trendy, this watch will suit him well. But they also have the 101G series that puts the Gucci spin on a dive watch. This watch is probably my favorite with the subtle but strong G right on the bezel of the watch.
