Responsibilities and Daily Duties of a Veterinary Technician

Posted in Pets on September 18th, 2010 by Jim – Comments Off

Taking on the daily tasks of a veterinary technician is definitely not a walk in the park, even after several years of training and schooling there will always be something new that is learned while working. While the majority of duties involve the most popular pets like cats and dogs, there will without a doubt be situations in which someone brings in an injured coyote or rabbit with a bladder problem. These scenarios, while very unique, will need to be taken care of just like any other event and it is the duty of a veterinary technician to figure out how and what to do to make sure they are following protocol but still doing the right thing in helping the injured or hurt animal. However, while there will be the strange situations that occur there are also plenty of daily duties that will occur on a daily basis no matter what.

Assisting in birthing, spaying and neutering is a common task that a vet tech will assist with as they will give veterinarians a hand in the duties that they are performing. Having to euthanize animals that are seriously ill or injured this is something that will always be a very depressing and hard responsibility because no animal lover wants to see an amazing animal have to be put to sleep due to an injury or illness that was not their fault. Even those animals that are simply passing away due to old age it is hard to put them to sleep because they are so helpless and do not know what is going on. Some other duties include recording information about patients, providing specialized nursing care for sick animals, taking and developing x-rays, recording case histories, treating and diagnosing medical conditions as well as administering medication topically and orally. All in all, while this profession does have some demanding tasks for a somewhat unimpressive salary those that have a great love for animals and are okay with sacrificing income can have an amazing career working in this industry.

Cat Litter Boxes Guide

You know you need it, but that does not make it any less of a pain. No matter what steps you take, there is a smell and hard to clean mess. But, that is all part of owning a cat, or is it?

For Starts

Follow one general rule of thumb- one litter box per cat, plus an extra. Clean cat litter daily and the cat box weekly. Frequent emptying can keep the cat going in the box instead of the floor. Some cats need their litter box cleaned after each use. Having more than one cat box can be helpful when you are away and unable to clean the litter.

Give the cat desired privacy by keeping the litter box in a quiet area…unless the cat is most interested in staying in one area or around your area. In that case, but the litter box in that area.

Litter Boxes

Try different types of litter boxes to see what your cat prefers- round, square, rectangular, hooded, or non-hooded. Hooded litter boxes can be confining and keep smells in, but unlike an open box, it offers privacy and reduces scattering mess. Cat weight is important; an 8 lb. cat can fit into a round litter box better than a 15 lb cat can.

Plastic litter boxers are more decorative, but can stain and retain smells. Metal litter boxes are more durable, but are less appealing aesthetically.

Mod litter boxes, that look like a fancy trash can, allow the cat to climb in from the top. There are also designer cat boxes that look more like furniture. These provide room for the cat to move, keep the litter where it goes, provide aesthetic appeal to you, privacy for the cat, and can even match your existing furniture.

Automatic cat litter boxes scoop the litter for you. However, there are multiple complaints on different brands from- “My cat is afraid of it” to “The thing broke in two weeks.” Maybe not the best choice for a skittish cat.

The best cat box is truly a matter of two opinions- you and the cat. Check out CordialCat.com if you are looking for a cat litter box.

Liter can also smell bad. Thankfully, there are many odor maintenance cat litters on the market. Again, shop around to find the best one for your needs. Look for biodegradable litter, like Feline Pine, if you are concerned about the environmental impact.

A few simple steps can help you and your cat live in harmony.
