Posted in Pets on February 17th, 2011 by Jim – Comments Off

Having a dog for a pet has always been a privilege, more so if it’s a Chihuahua. Not only do you get to have a pet, you also have a best friend and a Barbie doll all rolled into one. As one would have it, this type of dogs can’t be any cuter than when they are dressed up. But there’s more to putting Chihuahua clothes than simply having fun as this breed of dogs actually necessitate clothing.

Due to Chihuhuas’ small bodies and short-length furs, these dogs have limited capacity for conserving body heat. Thus, in order to keep them warm and comfortable, especially during winter season, it is necessary for this type of dogs to wear Chihuahua clothing.

But before you go out looking for a new set of clothes for your Chichuahua, it is important to know some important dressing tips to help you select the right type of clothes for your pet while having fun with the shopping experience.

A Chihuahua sweater is a clothing item that you should consider including in your list. For cold seasons, you must pick a sweater that has thick linings for efficient heat absorption capacity. For temperature outdoor weather, you could choose one made of light fabrics like cotton. For a more charming look, you can buy sweaters embellished with cute accessories.

In addition to sweaters, you might also need to consider purchasing Chihuahua coats and raincoats. This will be necessary, especially during rainy seasons or if you live in a place where it often rains. A pair of water proof boots to protect your dog’s paws is another item that you may think of buying.

Furthermore, since your Chihuahua is an undeniably endearing pet that quite deserves chic and trendy clothes, your may want to include cute accessories like jewelries, scarves, hats and ribbons.

Last but not the least, and especially if you have a Chihuahua that enjoys running and playing around, make sure to buy pet clothes and accessories that are of good quality brand and won’t break or be easily damaged.

Choose Cosequin for cats

Has your feline friend started to slow down and become more creaky and less mobile, happier to stay in the house than go outside catching mice, this could be the effects of feline arthritis. Arthritis can be due to old injuries or simply the result of the ageing process; whatever the cause this can cause your cat a lot of pain and discomfort. Cosequin for cats is a supplement that will help to regenerate the cartilage that breaks down with arthritic cats, this in turn will help to reduce the swelling and inflammation, giving your cat some mobility back. It can be beneficial to your cat if you take the time to sit on the floor with them and play games, this will at least keep them moving, and getting them to exercise there joints. When cats become arthritic the cartilage in the joints starts to degenerate, usually the cartilage will help the joints glide smoothly past each other, but as the cartilage breaks down the joints start to grate against each other, this in turn causes inflammation and swelling. The supplements that you have in cosequin will help to regenerate the cartilage, reducing swelling and inflammation; hopefully this will help your cat to regain some of that mobility.

It has to be said that it is not only cats that suffer with arthritis, unfortunately dogs are prone to this disease as well, luckily cosequin for dogs is also available. This is available as a double strength chewable tablet, or in capsule form, with the capsules you can break them open and sprinkle onto your dogs’ moist food and stir in. This is a nutritional supplement, the aim is to maintain joint health and slow down the onset of arthritis, it must be said that it is always advisable to speak to your vet before taking any course of action, just in case there are any underlying health issues.

Is Canine Training Fun For The Dog?

Posted in Pets on October 14th, 2010 by Jim – Comments Off

Canine training, although adopted by many dog training schools as part of their name or marketing information, normally refers to specialised dog training done by the security industry, the military and the police. This training includes protection and attack work and is often (rightly or wrongly) associated with violence and brutality.

Although dogs are by nature aggressive, this aggression does not normally come to the fore in today’s environment. This natural aggressive behaviour of the dog has to be is stimulated when doing protection training so that the dog can do the job. The owner or trainer has to ensure through this process that he remains the alpha lest he become the target of this aggression. Therefore the mutual respect and trust between dog and owner needs to constantly be reinforced. A question that needs to be asked is whether or not the dog enjoys this type of training?

By way of example, think of any all contact sport that can get pretty ruthless (boxer, wrestler or football player). Although the players and their coaches as well as opponents in these sports are often friends, whilst training things can get pretty rough and painful. That is simply how the training is done, and everybody accepts as such and has fun actually playing the sport and doing the training. Canine training needs to be seen in this context. The trick is to understand that the pain inflicted is never personal, but is part of the sport or game.

Looking at the origins of dogs (coming from wolves and wild dogs), stalking, hunting and fighting for survival was how they lived. Even after many centuries of domestication and breeding, those instincts are still clearly present and it is therefore totally natural for a dog to still enjoy the thrill of the hunt. If you have ever closely watched police dog during training, or even when they are on duty, it is very clear that they enjoy and revel in every minute of doing canine training. They were after all born to it.

Responsibilities and Daily Duties of a Veterinary Technician

Posted in Pets on September 18th, 2010 by Jim – Comments Off

Taking on the daily tasks of a veterinary technician is definitely not a walk in the park, even after several years of training and schooling there will always be something new that is learned while working. While the majority of duties involve the most popular pets like cats and dogs, there will without a doubt be situations in which someone brings in an injured coyote or rabbit with a bladder problem. These scenarios, while very unique, will need to be taken care of just like any other event and it is the duty of a veterinary technician to figure out how and what to do to make sure they are following protocol but still doing the right thing in helping the injured or hurt animal. However, while there will be the strange situations that occur there are also plenty of daily duties that will occur on a daily basis no matter what.

Assisting in birthing, spaying and neutering is a common task that a vet tech will assist with as they will give veterinarians a hand in the duties that they are performing. Having to euthanize animals that are seriously ill or injured this is something that will always be a very depressing and hard responsibility because no animal lover wants to see an amazing animal have to be put to sleep due to an injury or illness that was not their fault. Even those animals that are simply passing away due to old age it is hard to put them to sleep because they are so helpless and do not know what is going on. Some other duties include recording information about patients, providing specialized nursing care for sick animals, taking and developing x-rays, recording case histories, treating and diagnosing medical conditions as well as administering medication topically and orally. All in all, while this profession does have some demanding tasks for a somewhat unimpressive salary those that have a great love for animals and are okay with sacrificing income can have an amazing career working in this industry.
