The Grand Piano Lamp
Posted in Lighting on September 3rd, 2010 by Jim – Comments OffLooking for a piano lamp? There are many different ways to light up your sheet music, and most music companies will have a wide selection of available piano lamps. Here are a few types you may want to consider:
A desk piano lamp is designed mostly for upright pianos. Like a desk lamp, these lamps are designed to sit on top of a surface. Unlike a normal desk lamp, however, a desk piano lamp is designed only to shine light at one area. This allows the lamp to illuminate the sheet music without shining light into your eyes; nobody wants to try to read sheet music while squinting through a beam of light. A desk piano lamp is usually a little bigger than the other piano lights, simply because it uses a solid base to support itself. This means you’ll want to find a lamp with something soft on the bottom – usually felt or suede – that will keep the lamp from scratching the surface of your piano. These lamps are designed either to sit directly beside or directly behind the music stand, with a flexible top that allows you to adjust the light.
A clip-on lamp can be much more convenient than a desk lamp design. These lights are much smaller than the desk piano lamps, and they usually have a battery pack in the back of them, rather than a cord and plug. This type of lamp makes a great grand piano lamp, because it allows you to clip the light directly onto your music stand. The only real downside to these lamps is that they’re battery-operated, so you’ll have to change the batteries once in a while.
There are several types of grand piano lamp. The two most common are the clip-on lamp (described above) and the floor lamp. The main design of any grand piano lamp is to keep in mind that a grand piano might not have much space on top of it for a lamp. This may be because the top is raised, or it might just be because the owner is more picky about what kind of sounds the piano picks up from objects on top of it. Either way, a grand piano lamp usually takes a hands-off tactic, allowing the lamp to shine on the sheet music from somewhere other than the top of the piano. The floor lamp design is built to be very flexible, so you can place the lamp off to the side of the piano and lean the light down onto the sheet music.
