Drapes, Blinds and Valances for Windows

Posted in Interior Design and Decorating on November 16th, 2010 by Jim – Comments Off

Window coverings are available in a wide variety of styles. Drapes, blinds and valances for windows can be decorative and functional and are made of various materials with cloth and wood being the most common.

Drapes are often made of a heavy fabric such as damask or velvet. These window coverings most often extend from just above the window casement to the floor. When paired with a light weight material like gauze or lace, they can be quite formal in appearance making them a favorite for parlors and dining rooms. When pulled back and secured with decorative cording or a sash, full drapes can take on a more relaxed feel that is perfect for a family room or great room.

Blinds and shades are available in several styles. Roller blinds, which are mounted at the top of a window casing, can be made of fabric or vinyl. These are usually used in conjunction with other window curtains or drapes to block the view into a room, or as a way to more completely block out sunlight. Match stick blinds are a roll blind made of plastic or wood assembled like a woven mat that can be rolled up or down using a pulley-like system. Roman and balloon shades work similarly to roll up blinds, the only difference being that instead of rolling up they fold over or create a fan-like fold as they rise.

Window valances can be used with any of these window coverings. A valance is a length of fabric that hangs over the top portion or a window. It can be used as the top treatment in a 3-part window treatment consisting of sheer panels or blinds as the inner most layer, full length drapes as the second layer and the valance across the top as the final layer.

This type of layering is most often used for a formal room as a way to add dimension and interest. Valances may also be used with blinds or shades as a way to dress up an otherwise plain window. Sliding glass doors covered with vertical blinds are a perfect place for this type of valance as they add a little window dressing without interfering with the operation of the opening.

Drapes, blinds and valances whether used together, or alone, can be the focal point of a room, or a background setting for the rest of the room. Choices of fabric and color are nearly limitless. They are available, ready-made in all standard window sizes, but can also be ordered in fabrics to coordinate with other upholstered furnishings and pillows for a designer customized look with ease.

Blackout Roller Blinds – Enjoy Great Benefits

Posted in Interior Design and Decorating on September 14th, 2010 by Jim – Comments Off

Using a blind as a window covering in your home is generally considered a good idea due to the fact that they’re functional as well as great looking (most of the time, at least). There’s a large variety to choose from, so finding the right material and color to match the interior of your home is now extremely easy.

Because of the way the world is and the in the age that we live, lots of people demand window treatments that help them to utilize time according to their convenience. What I mean by this is that many people have to work at night and therefore rest during the day time. For homes where this is required, blackout roller blinds are the best thing to use to create a night-like (i.e. dark) environment. To put it simply, they create a convenient and comfortable atmosphere according to your needs.

There are various benefits of using these room darkening shades on your windows:

Room darkening: Their greatest ability (as the name suggests) is to darken a room. People who work night shifts can rest comfortably during the day in a darkened atmosphere (that resembles the nighttime). Such blackout roller blinds have the ability to completely block out incoming light and sound as they are good insulators.

Saving energy: Since these blinds are good insulators they are good energy savers as well. During the summer they can help you to keep your home cool whilst reducing the need of coolers or air conditioners in the home. In the same way, during in winter they can help keep your home warm (by providing insulation) so that the use of room heaters can be reduced. Because of this, the energy efficiency of your home is improved and you can save a significant amount of money by making use of these blinds.

Audio-visual equipment: Most offices and homes that use projectors or cinema-like screens can make use of these blinds. For example, they’re extremely useful when using audio-visual equipments and making presentations. Homes that have special recreation rooms can also make good use of blackout roller blinds as they’ll improve your movie watching experience.

Other than these, blackout blinds are useful for adding privacy to rooms (possibly for when you don’t want to be disturbed whilst working). Such blinds can also come with remote controls making their operation very smooth and comfortable, especially for people who have limited mobility.

Nothing Brings Color to a Room Like Red Curtains

Posted in Interior Design and Decorating on September 10th, 2010 by Jim – Comments Off

It can be fun and interesting decorating the windows of a home. There are many different styles and ideas for window dressings to create different effects within a room. But if color is desired in a certain area, or absolutely essential then the window treatments of choice should be red curtains.

Nothing brightens up a room like the color red. It can be soft or vibrant, vivid or muted, but it will always add a welcome splash of color to wherever it is placed. Solid dark red curtains have a rich quality to them because of the depth of the color. If a room consists of darker tones and elegant furnishings, this type of drapery, in floor length tied back with contrasting colored ties, would be a beautiful accent in the room. A decorative valance at the top of the window would complete the picture and provide an elegant finished look to the top of the drape.

Another idea would be the use of red lined curtains at doors leading out to the patio. It would be nice to have some type of material draped at the doors to add style to an area that would otherwise look drab. And lined curtains will allow for more privacy when they are drawn across the doors. They will also do a good job of keeping out bright sunlight in the summer and reducing drafts in the cold winter months.

Window dressings should never be ignored when decorating, as they can do so much to complete the look of a room. With no curtains at the windows, the room is not going to look finished. There will actually appear to be something missing, as would be the case in most professional decorator’s opinions. And window dressings that do not fit the style of the room, or clash with the color scheme will create a feeling of disharmony. It is important to choose window dressings with care to give each room in the house that polished look. And for color have some fun and choose a bold red.

Zebra Print Decor Options

Posted in Interior Design and Decorating on July 15th, 2010 by Jim – Comments Off

Zebra print is cool.  There is just nothing like it to perk up a room and add a dash of contemporary style and primitive zing. Designers world wide, seek the perfect black and white zebra print when they want to add a splash of understated vigor to their client’s home.  There is room for a fabulous zebra print within nearly any decorating budget.

Solid colors in a room ache for a zebra print to make them interesting.  Throw down a lime green scarf with a couple of pink pillows on top of it to really make your modern “retro” vibrate.  If the zebra print you have found turns out to be too bold, then it can be toned down with layers of neutrals, like a tan afghan coverlet and navy pillows to bring the room back to a comfortable reality.

Who can resist a zebra print rug? This is no ordinary rug. It is not the floral rug that grandma would choose. You won’t be tiptoeing through an English garden, you’ll be trekking through a nomadic safari grassland of decorating. Be brave and keep your visual perspective by going for the exotic that you love.

The true rug devotee will own numerous chic zebra rugs to accentuate different areas and continue this decorative grassland theme through the whole house. One will have very wide short strips in a vibrant black and white, reminiscent of a chevron, but another will have narrow stripes with a slightly muted tonal quality. It does not matter, the more variation, the more interesting the motif.

Since these are faux prints and not animal pelts your home will remain animal friendly. You will only be borrowing their fantastic color and pattern as a way to pay homage to these natural wonders of creation.  Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery and even the kids will want small playful zebra print rugs to spice up their rooms. A few small zebra print rugs might be attached to the wall with hook and loop tape to create an overlapping backdrop of fantastic and fascinating pattern, almost like a gigantic abstract puzzle.

Remember when choosing these fabulous zebra print pieces for your home that “less is more,” especially when it comes to a pattern as bold as this one is. Do not overpower the entire house by making everything from the bathroom scales to the bedding zebra print. Choose one major piece per room and if it can handle one more in a distant area of the same large room, then fine, but if you go overboard it will no longer be stylish, it will be quite garish, and no one wants that.

Go ahead and indulge in elegance with a wonderful zebra print couch, but don’t put a zebra print rug in front of it, and zebra print pillows on it, and zebra print curtains behind it. You will have transformed your utterly unique and fabulous couch into an unremarkable and indistinguishable bit of clutter.  That wonderful couch might fit in the living room, or your daughter’s bedroom, but only if the zebra print is kept to an absolute minimum — in which case, you will be the envy of the neighborhood.

Curtain Rod Basics

Over the years, evolution of curtain rods has come a long way. Wide range of curtain rods is available to be chosen from. You can try hanging the types of curtains you want on the type of rod you prefer. Different types of rods are used by shears, draperies and café curtains.

It is very easy to use tensions rods and they work very well with recessed windows. A spring is present inside the rod which enables the rod to be pushed forward. Rubber caps can be used to cover the ends of the rod that push against the windowsill. Spring eradicates the need for any hardware thus providing you an ease for installation. Sheers or light weight curtains can be hung from these rods.

Sash rods and café sash rods are available in round or flat designs. Because these rods are designed to lie flat against the window or door, they make a great hanger for hanging door panels. Curtains hanging from these rods should be starting a little above the window and should be ending a little below it. These rods become a perfect combination for French doors and casement windows. The hardware of these rods includes shallow mounting brackets so that the silk curtains lie flat to the door. The circumference of café sash rods is a little bigger than sash rods.

The perfect choice for kitchen curtains is café rods. These rods are available in many different sizes and they are just perfect for café curtains. While some café rods are available with the rings to which you will attach the curtains, you can also buy these rods without the rings. These rods also make a good combination for tab tie curtains or curtains which can be pulled easily to one side or the other.

Traverse rods are used mainly for dining room or living room draperies. These rods provide hooks to which the curtains are hung and they also permit drapers to be opened and closed with the use of a pull cord. These rods are highly attractive and decorative.

The type of material used in making a curtain rod can be wood, metal or wrought iron. The type of the material used in the making of these rods decides the cost and the many designs also decide the cost.
