People should be aware of the possible risks associated with using these products in lieu of seeing their dentist.
Carbamide peroxide used to be a popular ingredient for teeth whitening products. However, it tended to cause too much oxidizing and its use became more limited. The ingredients used in teeth whitening today are mostly safe with very few side effects and those that do occur are easily remedied. Some people that have slightly sensitive teeth or mild irritation around the gum may feel a bit of discomfort. Sensitivity of the teeth takes place because the enamel is thinning, typically naturally. Some of the the whitening products can speed up that process. In this case it is best not to continue to use that product.

Hydrogen peroxide has been known to cause vomiting, upset stomach and sometimes stomach pain if allowed to ingest when used for teeth whitening. Bleaching your teeth too often can cause discoloration which looks like a translucent gray color. Obviously a patient should stop using the treatment if the the product starts causing permanent damage.
You will want to ensure that the bleaching trays fit your teeth properly to keep from hurting your gums. Once the sensitive tissues of the mouth come in contact with bleaching products, gum irritation happens which hurts. Teeth whitening is mostly safe as it encourages one to keep their teeth healthy and can protect from any damage to the teeth as well. A patient can get very white teeth using teeth whitening products as long as the instructions are followed on the label. However, most teeth whitening tips indicate beverages like coffee and tea, as well as smoking, can even be more damaging to teeth enamel than most products.
