Is a Mastectomy Bra Necessary?
Posted in Health on March 1st, 2011 by Jim – Comments OffMany women that are recovering from breast surgery or a mastectomy take time to re-evaluate themselves and consider what the future holds for them. One of the first things they begin to consider are mastectomy prosthesis and bras designed to hold them. If the woman has no previous experience with these garments, the choices and availability may be a bit confusing, but the reality is far simpler.
A prosthesis bra is virtually indistinguishable from a traditional bra. The key difference is the mastectomy bra pockets designed to hold a breast form. Usually these pockets are made of spandex and snugly hold a form in place. Many women actually use old bras and have pocket sewn into them with much success. This shows just how similar the two really are.
Because these bras are nearly the same as bras that a woman is used to, she will have no problem finding a style, fabric and cut to please her. The companies that make these bras have spent years making the designs as fashionable and comfortable as possible. Plus, with insurance the cost is not a factor.
The necessity for a mastectomy bra is more than just cosmetic. Silicone inserts can mimic the natural weight of breasts and help a woman maintain better balance. Decades of living spent with breasts have trained the body and the muscular system to behave in certain ways depending upon the situation. The absence of this weight can throw a woman into misalignment. On the cosmetic side, the necessity is apparent because it helps a woman to maintain her privacy. Personal medical issues are usually kept private and a well-fitted set of breast forms can help a woman look exactly like her pre-surgical self. It is medically necessary. Technically, no, but the psychological necessity of it is not to be underestimated.
