What Makes A Kayak A Good Fishing Kayak
Posted in Fishing on February 2nd, 2011 by Jim – Comments OffThe question of “What makes a kayak a good fishing kayak” comes up quite a bit by beginner kayak anglers. It happens because so many people want to save money on their first boat by purchasing a fishing kayak that may not have been designed specifically for fishing. These are often referred to as “recreational kayaks”. The term recreational just means that it will help you get out onto the water for any of your recreational activities. Recreational fishing kayaks are also substantially cheaper than a fishing kayak, because fishing kayaks typically come rigged with what you need to get on the water.
However, a few key aspects that make a kayak a good fishing kayak that you will need to look out for when you are purchasing are: bow width, length, weight, and available deck space for rigging. The bow width needs to be at least 28″ or preferably wider in order to accommodate you moving around while you are on the water. You will also want to make sure that it is at least 10′ to 12′ long to ensure that you are going to be able to easily get from spot to spot without wearing yourself out from paddling and over-correcting so much.
The weight of the kayak plays a big deal in whether or not you are going to want to take it out very often, but the biggest aspect that you should concern yourself with when purchasing a recreational kayak for fishing is the amount of deck space that you have available. Available deck space will give you areas to rig your different gear such as rod holders, anchor trolleys and rudders. All of these items help tremendously in providing a comfortable time on the water whenever you are kayak fishing and not just trolling around on a kayak for the day.
