A Heroin Addiction Help Guide for your Chances of Success at Quitting

Posted in Addictions on January 24th, 2011 by Jim – Comments Off

Every heroin addiction help guide should mention how many people struggle to release themselves from the habit each year. In the year 2009 alone, there were a third of a million addicted Americans who sought heroin detox and rehab. As staggering a figure as that is, it is only a small fraction of the number of people out there who continue in the habit without seeking help.

The process of detoxifying the system of the effects of heroin addiction does not occur in the hospital alone. Hospitalization is only the first step in a long process that involves a good deal of commitment. The process of heroin detox at one of these centers works mainly on the strength of one of several drugs. Methadone is the most widely used of these – it has been in use for a quarter century, has enough testing done on it to be proven effective and harmless, and it is widely available.

Heroin use brings pleasure to an addict by acting on a certain very specific area of the brain. It makes use of the way dopamine acts on the body to achieve this. Methadone on the other hand, acts as a substitute for dopamine in the body and takes away the ability of heroin to work with the body’s natural supply of dopamine. Other drugs like suboxone act by allowing the body its fix, only doing it without the pleasure an addict associates with drugs.

In a program of treatment for heroin addiction, guide counselors take over after the drugs have begun to act, for a period of in-depth counseling they help an addict establish some kind of a support system to help himself stay on the path he has placed himself on. Does quitting addiction actually require such thorough professional help? Most people who try to quit on their own usually fall right back. One is usually helpless against the effects of a powerful addictive drug. Certainly, the statistics for how many heroin addicts actually manage to go clean are not an encouraging read. However, it only takes determination and inner strength to succeed. There are many who actually have succeeded and who live fulfilling lives.

Marijuana Addiction Detox – Getting Help For Cannabis Abuse

Posted in Addictions on September 7th, 2010 by Jim – Comments Off

If you crave the effects of marijuana and can’t wait to use it again, then you would most likely be considered an addict. Being addicted to marijuana means you don’t feel that you can function normally without either smoking cannabis or consuming the resin from it. Individuals who can’t fight the urge to smoke marijuana and eventually give in are prime candidates for marijuana addiction detox.

Going through detox, or detoxification, for marijuana is necessary for people who abuse cannabis. There are withdrawal symptoms present during detox for any type of drug. This is the body’s way of displaying its lack of the drug. Once the human system becomes immune to a drug, the brain thinks it is normal to have this substance and doesn’t know what to do without it. The most common symptoms of marijuana withdrawal include:

  1. An increase in aggression
  2. Anxiety
  3. Difficulty sleeping
  4. Irritability

There are a number of methods used for detox of marijuana. It is best if the cannabis abuser gets help, instead of trying to detox on his/her own. Having a person or group of people for support will make the withdrawal process easier to handle. These individuals have usually gone through the same steps and know what to expect. The sponsor is the person in contact with the abuser. This person is able to answer any questions that may arise during the detox process.

Some people are unable to handle going to a support group and need medications to aid in their detoxification process. Unlike some of the more serious drugs, detox for marijuana is relatively short. It takes between 3 and 5 days for cannabis detoxification to occur. This is an average number, so some people might find that the time is shorter or longer than this. There will be continual thoughts about using marijuana and even some cravings for a short time after this detox period.

Treatment centers and programs to help people with their withdrawal from marijuana usage are located across the country. Toll-free phone numbers are available to use for finding a center, program, or just to speak with a counselor. Someone is usually manning the phones at the other end of these toll free lines. Calls are confidential, in order to protect the privacy of the person making the call.

A person who knows of someone who needs to go through detox for marijuana can also call any of these numbers. Information will be provided to the caller on the steps to be taken to find the appropriate source of help for the person in need of detoxification.

People who continue to abuse cannabis have the potential to develop health risks. They run the risk of having a heart attack, damaging their ability to retain new memories, or developing emphysema or a chronic cough. Marijuana addiction detox centers for women are also available. While many centers and programs accept both men and women, sometimes it’s easier to join a group that is all one sex. This greatly reduces the chance of a man and a woman with the same addiction becoming a couple and decreasing their chance of success with marijuana detox.

Feeding our Internet Addiction

Posted in Addictions on August 25th, 2010 by Jim – Comments Off

It’s hard to imagine how people lived without the internet. Older generations fear it has replaced our ability to connect with others and taken away jobs. Whatever the disagreement is, it is also hard to resist and thrive without it. Smart phones have made accessing the internet a routine and essential tool that many people use to conduct business and their lives in general. Most people email nowadays, or text, to let you know frivolous to pertinent information. Many stay extremely active with social networking services like facebook, and some only like it to play Mario games. Whatever the vice, it is obvious that the internet can be addicting.

How can you not be addicted to the internet? It is an information super highway that feeds entertainment you simply cannot capture on television or live events. There are tons of people creating ridiculous home videos and posting hilarious pictures that it makes it almost impossible to not want to check it constantly. Bored at work? Waiting at the Department of Motor Vehicles? Hop on the internet and watch that viral video that Tosh.0 was talking about on Comedy Central.

While feeding your internet addiction, it is important as human beings to recall a time when the internet wasn’t around. Was communication really better? Were there more jobs? There are two ways to look at the internet. With all the outsourcing going on in the job market today, it seems that the internet has lost jobs for people but gained for others. The important thing to hold on to principal values like good communication and relationships with others. Just because you need to feed your addiction, doesn’t mean you should become a robot. Constantly checking your phone or even texting while people are talking to you is impolite. If people can draw a line between their need for the internet and social responsibility to maintaining relationships, we should all be just fine.

Video game addiction

Posted in Addictions, Games on July 26th, 2010 by Jim – Comments Off

Everybody seems to have at least one friend who has been lured into a video game not to be seen again for months or even years.  This is the ugly face of video game addiction.

Like all addictions, the people that are most likely to fall prey are those that have a predilection to addictive behavior in the first place.  This doesn’t mean that if John the addict is an alcoholic he’s also going to become a video game addict.  What it means is that if someone is in a bad place, they are much more likely to drop deeper into that bad place if the escape mechanism is there and readily available.

How does it start?  Take one of my favorite test cases, a close friend of mine, who we’ll name Chachi for the purpose of this example.  He found himself in a loveless marriage.  Chachi has a couple of kids out of it but wasn’t predisposed to be driven to the bottle or other drugs, so instead he escaped into one of the many online fantasy games out there.  He got into the guild thing and somehow these online avatars became more important to him than his family and his real life friends.

Chachi is one of these guys that is naturally charming in a self deprecating fashion that drives women crazy.  When he got into this awful relationship the charm wore off and instead of going out and participating in life he pushed those efforts into an online world and shut himself off from the real world.  The result was an ugly divorce.  She blamed the video game.

Blaming video games or those that develop them for the potential of addiction they might cause is ridiculous.  That’s like claiming that violent video games cause kids to go out and hurt people.  There is nothing in the many research studies done that supports this.

People need to take responsibility for themselves and for those that they care about.  If depressive behavior begins in a loved one, find the true source behind it.  Talk it out.  Nip it off at the bud.  Don’t blame outside causes that you can’t control.  Please, please avoid the impulse to contract out the litigious sleezeballs in this country to start a frivolous law suit trying to gain some lame sort of retribution from those that provide the escape.

Addiction comes in many forms.  There is no disputing that there are those that are addicted to video games but the game itself is rarely the reason.  Take the time to figure out the real one.
