A Little About Boquete Hotels

Where in the World is Boquete?

Just a few years ago this small mountain village had a few hostels and inns now Boquete Hotels number over forty. But where the heck is Boquete and what is driving so many people there? Boquete is in the highlands province of Chriqui in the Republic of Panama.

Panama Boomers

Not long ago when you mentioned Panama people would think of the Panama Canal or that notorious dictator Manuel Noreiga. Now baby-boomers are flocking to Panama for a different reason – lifestyle!  But it’s not the seaside Panama Beach condo that’s attracting the most. It’s the cool mountain air. Sure when the baby-boomers where young they coudn’t get enough ‘fun in the sun’. They put the top down and sprayed on baby oil ’til they became bronze Gods. Now the boomers are retiring and they’ve traded in the bronze tanner for a sun hat, hiking boots and gardening supplies. Hot flashes and skin cancer are now driving the largest consuming population in history into the hills of Panama.

Booming Boquete

A few decades ago the boomers came to Boquete to hike the Los Quetzales Trail and spend a few dollars to stay at a Boquete Hostel. But the boomers changed and now they want the luxury treatment and all of the comforts of home as they shop for retirement real estate among this highland community. The market, local Panamanians and budding ex-pat entrepreneurs have responded to the demand by building Hotels in Boquete in all shaoes and size and for every budget and desire. Now there are over 40 places of lodging to choose from in Boquete. The back-packers still come and teh hostels are still here but there are also hotels, inns, B&B’s and Spa Resorts. Valle Escondido Hotel and Resort even has a challenging and beautiful 9 hole executive Golf Course meandering through it’s former coffee farm gated community.

Interesting info on Panama and Boquete. I lived there through much of the Boom and you’re right on. It’s still a lovely place to visit and so is Panama. They used to have a slogan ‘The Path Less Travelled’ which is a perfect description. Panama is still relatively unspoiled and authentic. Thanks for posting!
