A Guide to Personal Air Purifiers

Global environmental pollution has acquired frightening proportions. Indoor pollution, a very serious but oft neglected part of this global hazard is responsible for a number of health problems like allergies and bronchial ailments like asthma. Millions of air pollutants are always on the prowl to cause us health problems. Personal air purifiers have the potential to significantly reduce these dangerous enemies of human health.

Indoor air pollutants can be broadly classified into two categories. The first class is the solid or particulate pollutants like dust, sand, mud, pollen, dirt and normally invisible bacteria and germs. The other class is the gaseous pollutants that emanate from cigarettes, car exhausts, paints, adhesives, stoves and anything else that emits gas. Personal air purifiers filter and trap these pollutants and thus the air is freshened. There are fiber filters in the purifiers that attract and trap all particles and gases. This clears the air of contaminants and you can breathe freely.

You have plenty of choices in air purifiers. They come in all shapes and sizes and some perform specific activities. Numerous brands are available and the price range is also quite wide. The choice is yours. Purifiers with High Efficiency Particulate Air filters or HEPA are preferable to others according to air purifier ratings. The HEPA removes all those miniscule particles in the air which other filters cannot. Moreover emission of ozone, which is again a health hazard, is non existent in HEPA purifiers. Other purifiers which do not have HEPA filters pose this problem. Selection of air purifiers should be determined by their efficiency. Look for ones that are high in performance but economical.

Personal air purifiers allow us to breathe fresh air at least when we are indoors. They remove almost all air pollutants and destroy the very source that creates health problems. This drastically reduces the occurrence of air borne diseases and keeps us relatively healthy.
